On the trail to Granite Lake in the Beartooth mountains, on the Wyoming/Montana border northeast of Yellowstone. This is my first trip to these mountains. They are among the most beautiful and majestic in the world. The Beartooth mountains are composed of Precambrian granite and crystalline metamorphic rocks dated at approximately 4 billion years old, making these rocks some of the oldest on Earth.

I have always been fascinated by mountain goats. Some were released in the Ruby Mountains in Nevada where I grew up.  They came from Washington.  I would drive up to Angel Lake which is about 8200' and glass for the goats and then climb up to take pictures when I would find them.  I read a great book on goats years ago "A Beast The Color of Winter"; amazing animals.

Brokentop in the Oregon Cascades. There are still flowers along the creeks high in the mountains in spite of this hot dry summer. The clouds were dramatic over the weekend.
