Get ready!!

Meet the people who make the discoveries, visit the installations where they work, discover the computer centre that is at the heart of the worldwide computing grid, explore hi-tech laboratories, descend 100 metres underground to the experimental caverns, visit the control centres where the scientists and engineers monitor and control their elaborate instruments, take in fascinating presentations about this amazing scientific adventure…

The detailed programme and instructions on how to sign up for the underground visits will be available soon via http://cern.ch/opendays.

---

Real life is so much scarier than in the movies... The #NSA  can do some truly frightening things.

The story of how today's movie industry got started

Basically, the original movie industry had stagnated and had no incentive to innovate. Instead, they tried to sue their competition out of existence in order to maintain their status cuo.

The "independent" movie studios, led by what is now Universal Studios, decided that they weren't going to play by the rules and they weren't going to respect the movie industry's patents:

"Around the same time, Laemmle announced that he would not cooperate with the Edison Trust. He would buy his raw stock, films, and equipment from abroad, or from any manufacturer or producer willing to work with him. In response, the Edison Trust bombarded IMP with infringement suits—289 filings that burdened the company with almost a third of a million dollars in legal fees.

Meanwhile, General Film detectives constantly harassed IMP's production sets, looking for non-licensed equipment. IMP and other non-Edison movie companies countered this with evasive action.

"Cameramen kept several cameras on a set," cinema historian Janet Staigler writes. "When detectives arrived to catch them illegally using licensed equipment, the workers would pull out a non-infringing camera. Cameramen also used non-infringing exteriors but installed infringing mechanisms in the camera."
"
Eventually they won because the court-ordered fines for the patent violations were lower than the profits from their infringing activities. They were giving the public something which the established players didn't consider important, and the established players were wiped out.

It's funny how this is now happening to them. Universal Studios and the other big players in the movie and music business fail to see how the situation is changing, how the old way of doing business no longer applies, and they're trying to sue everyone into submission. They're trying to pass legislation like #SOPA, #PIPA and #CISPA to censor the internet and generally trying to make it impossible for anyone to compete with them and offer the services that they're not willing to give us.

I'll let +Matthew Inman tell it: http://theoatmeal.com/comics/game_of_thrones

Universal Studio's executives should look back at their history and realize that they're current strategy is not going to work. Evolve already!
