Introduction

I am a professional guide based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Although I was born in Portugal, I always had a passion for wildlife and the great outdoors. I remember being hooked to the TV on Sunday afternoons as a young boy, watching David Attenborough documentaries while all my friends where playing outside, or listen to countless stories from my parents’ time in Africa.

I also remember spending my pocket money on National Geographic magazines. I was speechless when looking at the incredible pictures and mesmerized by the stories. I dreamt, as a child, numerous times about Africa and its wide places full of life and drama, from its tribal people to the big predators.I knew that one day I would live in Africa and make it my home.

In 2008 I finally moved to South Africa where I went through all the legal qualifications to become a field guide, with the intention of guiding people through the African wilderness while sharing my passion for this amazing continent. Now, after five years, I'm fortunate enough to say that I’ve travelled extensively throughout Southern Africa, from the mighty Chobe river in Botswana with its massive population of Elephants, to the barren Namib Desert. As a field guide I get to see and share with my guests Africa’s most amazing spectacles and landscapes.

In the beginning I was very proud of capturing African wildlife and landscapes with my point-and-shoot camera. After a year I got my first DSLR as a gift and let me tell you, I was HOOKED after releasing the shutter button for the first time! It has been a hell of a ride and learning curve. South Africa is home of some of the best and inspiring wildlife photographers on the planet. A huge thank you goes to them for inspiring me and helping me learning more.

I cannot choose one location or subject as a favorite, they are so many! I love to photograph wildlife but the tribal people of Southern Africa hold a special place in my heart. But if I need to choose my top five destination/subjects to photograph in Southern Africa they would be: Chobe river for its Elephant populations, Okavango Delta and its waterways full of hippos and crocs, the Namib Desert for its barren landscape and contrasts, The Bushmen of Namibia & Botswana for their ancestral culture and finally the Kalahari for its open veld and striking skies.

On the Lookout

Meerkats are one of the most fascinating animals to watch in the African Bush.
They are very active animals and are always on the lookout for predators, mainly raptors

Great news

Global travel industry to grow 5.4% a year until 2023, report claims

The global travel industry will grow 'significantly' faster than world GDP over the next decade, according to a new report.

The forecasts were made in the study entitled Shaping the Future of Travel: Macro trends driving industry growth until 2023 - published yesterday and written by Oxford Economics and commissioned by travel technology company Amadeus.

Drawing on detailed macro-economic modeling, and qualitative interviews with industry experts, forecasts have been on a wide range of future trends.

The report was compiled by speaking to 15 top travel industry firms, including Heathrow Airport, Iberia, Thai Airways, Turkish Airlines, and Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.

According to the study, global travel will see sustained growth of 5.4% per annum over the next 10 years, outpacing expected global GDP increase of 3.4% in the same period.

It predicts large emerging markets fuelled by rising wealth, employment and changing consumer habits, will drive the rise.
