Also for good precaution, it's not hard to write a bash script that runs in background to tail the ssh log and send an email or even a text or sns (Amazon makes this easy enough) to inform you of any successful logins. Another quick script could allow you to shut out any terminal connections if you find yourself skilled enough.
Amazon web services also has a logging script where you can monitor any log file on an instance. Using this service, you can create alerts or triggers based on log records. This could be used to alert you of logins via ssh from unauthorized ips. You could again get creative and write a python or node.js script to cut any open connections. Amazon also makes it simple enough to rekey the server.

OK, I'm not a lawyer or a prosecutor (who I assume should probably also be a lawyer), so I don't know exactly the most correct word for what this is, but it's certainly unethical and illegal and should clearly result in punitive actions MUCH more significant than having to pay back what is likely just a fraction of the gains this practice actually generated for the banks. It would be like, if you robbed a jewelry store for $100,000, your only punishment was a sternly worded letter from the judge (asking you to monitor your own behavior more closely) and a fine of $20,000, and you got to keep the $100,000 because, well, you already deposited it and spent some of it and it'd get complicated to try and get it all back. I mean, if that were the outcome, would you rob again? Or, rather, how quickly would you rob again?
In contrast, this was treated as a major political event in both print and broadcast media, in Germany, and across much of the world. In the interview, Mr. Snowden lays out a succinct case as to how these domestic surveillance programs undermine and erode human rights and democratic freedom.
