This came out late Friday, so I'm re-posting for folks who might have missed it. At Tor.com, I'm talking about the least-appreciated character from TWIN PEAKS. If you like it, leave a comment over there, so they know somebody's reading it. :-)
An appreciation of Sheriff Harry S Truman, the unsung hero of Twin Peaks.

All but the last six chapters of Tufa #4 are done and polished. Hope to finish the rest this week.

The Siren just wandered in to where I was working, sighed dramatically and said, "I don't have a frog."

My dog Jack came in and said to me "are you crazy? Dogs don't talk."

The Squirrel Boy and I watched STAR TREK VI tonight, finishing off the original series. Boy, do I love this movie, and he, as always, was thoroughly captivated. And he appreciated it, too; he said, "You know, that was a great way to end it."  And he was exactly right.

The scene in Spock's quarters between Kirk and Spock, just before the final confrontation, may be my favorite scene in all of Trek.

Leonard Nimoy's death kind of cast a shadow over my day. Then, as I was putting her down for her nap, the Siren observed, "I need more pull-ups for my tiny little butt." And I found it impossible not to smile.

Definitely a bummer. Funny how kids cheer things up by sheer cuteness.

Parenting Achievement Unlocked: since it's Lumberjack Day at the Squirrel Boy's school, I introduced him to Monty Python's lumberjack song. I wonder how many other parents in town are doing the same thing this morning.

The Squirrel Boy and I started STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION tonight. I hadn't seen "Encounter at Farpoint" in years, and I'm reminded of George Carlin's line at the end of the first Bill and Ted movie: "They get better."

Patrick Stewart nails Picard from the get-go, and Jonathan Frakes is pretty much the Riker we would come to know. But the rest of the cast is a long, long way from the characters they would become by Season 3, the first consistently good year. I'd also completely forgotten that Colm Meaney was in the pilot, although they don't refer to him as O'Brien.

Went up to Arcadia Books in Spring Green, WI, to drop off a couple of ARCs of LONG BLACK CURL. The Siren amused herself while I was chatting up the staff.

So with the Siren down for her nap, the Squirrel Boy and I watched Star Trek V (the next one for him). His two best observations:
On the first scene with Sybok: "Is this guy a space psychiatrist?"
On Uhura's fan dance: "I hope Kirk gives her a raise."
(And I admit, I got a little teary at the final campfire scene, thinking that two of them are gone now.)

And I forgot the best part of today: I have to take all three kids to the dentist BY MYSELF.

The kids are all out of school for some insane reason (not weather-related), and the mater-familias is off to Chicago for work. So this will be me about 11:30 this morning.
