At my blog, some thoughts on Moffat leaving Doctor Who (and not leaving Sherlock), and the new X-Files.
When I heard that Steven Moffat is leaving Doctor Who, my first thought was,

Amen, brother. As far as I can, River might the only good significant thing to come out of Moffat's tenure. Sigh. And I still haven't watched Xfiles yet. David is super hesitant, so I may have to try it out solo.

Watched PINA, Wim Winders' documentary about dancer/choreographer Pina Bausch. It must've been something in its original 3D; it was still a fascinating example of modern dance, although there was very little context given in the "documentary" section. I had to look her up after seeing the movie, which is inefficient, to say the least.

Here's a video that uses some footage from the movie. Love this tune.

I picked up my adorable, sweet, gentle little daughter, who for some reason thought I was about to drop her (which I've never done) and so grabbed onto the nearest outcropping, digging her razor-sharp little nails into my nose. Yes, there was blood. Now I feel like Nicholson in the last half of CHINATOWN.

You know, if you count "senior citizen" as a minority, then there's not a single typical white male hero among the figures that came with the Millennium Falcon.

Beyond the seasonal stuff, the big event today will be finishing "The Lord of the Rings" with the C-in-C. He's loved the "Hobbitt" movies, and is totally in the moment with these: he teared up when Gandalf died, then gasped when he returned. And nobody loves epic battles more than he does.

Rewatched VELVET GOLDMINE last night. If you've never seen it, it's set in the glam-rock era and based verrrrry loosely on David Bowie, with a structure borrowed from "Citizen Kane." A melancholy film made sadder by the events of the past week. The death of a dream, and a dreamer.

Having lived through that era at an impressionable age and especially with the music portrayed I can say that the role Christian Bale plays is accurately depicted, in that you really did think that male pop stars of the times were beautiful and therefore confusing too. Watch Marc Bolan on Russell Harty and try to deny it. Marc was my man at that time and still is in some ways. It was much the same with others for Bowie. A great film and an impressive soundtrack too. Must watch mine again soon. Ta mate. x

Writing done for today. After not working on the WIP for a while, I may need to go back and re-read the whole thing to figure out where I'm going. On the plus side, the outline for Tufa #6 took off in a whole new direction, which I can't wait to actually write. I suspect it's a result of reading more Lee Smith (her novel "The Devil's Dream" is one of the great ones about music and musicians).

I also got to read a friend's movie script that's being shot in February (the film, not the friend). Always interesting to get mental images of characters, and then see how far off the mark I am when the first cast photos come out.

Now to fold laundry. Ah, the glamorous life of a writer.

Watched THE COMPANY, a 2003 ballet film directed by Robert Altman, as research for upcoming revisions of CHAPEL OF EASE. It's fiction but, as with most Altman, it's essentially plotless, showing the Joffrey Ballet (star Neve Campbell integrates seamlessly with the pros) over the course of a season. I know nothing about professional dance, so it was as alien a world as anything in "Star Wars."

The C-in-C was acting along with the movie and shouting, "Drop it! DROP IT!!"  He was totally in the moment, and could hardly stand the suspense.

"The Force Awakens" was a good STAR WARS movie, which isn't quite the same as being a good movie. Still, my kids loved it, and they're the target audience, after all. The poor Squirrel Boy was pretty overcome on the ride home trying to process it all.

As for me I'll wait a good while being not what you'd call a hardcore fan. Take it or leave it, me. I overheard a major spoiler and wasn't that bothered.
