Hi everyone,
I had a student ask the following question re the course assessment.

"Are supposed to track our own contributions / reflections. Do you have a preferred method if so?"

Great question. Here is a summary of my responses.

In this course, you are not required to track your own reflections. When I go to read everyone's blog posts at OLTD505.ca, I will be looking at the comment section to see frequently contributing voices. As well, I will be looking at your Twitter accounts and will be searching for your contributions on Google Plus to see how active you have been in those spaces. From this, in both the frequency and quality of your input/responses, I will have a good idea of how you modelled open/networked learning.

Also, you will have an opportunity to rate your own participation in various elements of the course in a final survey that will be provided at the end of the course.

I hope this helps!

Thanks,
Alec

Hey OLTD,
I've added 12 of 22 feeds to the http://oltd505.ca site ... you can take a look there to easily follow the blogs of your colleagues and provide comments.
Larry Lessig: Laws that choke creativity. I quite enjoyed Larry Lessig's Ted Talk: Laws that choke creativity. And, as he was speaking, my thoughts kept coming back to a personal debate I've had for several years now. As a former art teacher, I often had assignments where students were required ...

On the syllabus it says Course Dates: April 25 to June 5, 2015 (inclusive). So it seems to go from Saturday to Saturday? Week 2 going from May 2nd to the 9th. I think.

Hi ECMP 455!
Rebecca Stein tells me that there is an Education event on the topic of coping with grief in schools that conflicts with our class on Feb 24/15. As you know, ECMP 455 doesn't need to meet every week as it's meant to be very self-directed. As well, I feel that this is a very important topic and one that many of you should attend (if you are not already planning on going).

So, I am happy to cancel class on Tuesday Feb 24. However, since we are not meeting, I would very much like to see as many of you as possible participating in #saskedchat  that runs on Thursdays at 8pm to 9pm. I know that some of you already participate in this, but I'd like to see more representation from ECMP 355 and ECMP 455.

Thanks everyone. We'll connect the week after in class.

Take care.

Alec

Hi again,
We've put together a Twitter list for this cohort. Please find the list at: https://twitter.com/kbhildebrandt/lists/oltd505-2015/members

I noticed that there are many newbies to Twitter. For those who don't have an image or profile, I would highly encourage this in moving to better understand being and open/networked educator.

I noticed a couple of your had rather lengthy Twitter names as well. This might be a good time to change your name (before you develop a stronger profile) as people have to use it in the tweet to mention you (e.g.,@courosa is better than @courosa134235). If I could do it over, I would have went for @aleccouros(which I do also have) or simply @couros(which I do not own).

If you are new to Twitter, I would strongly recommend this resource: http://www.theedublogger.com/2012/02/13/the-updated-twitteraholics-guide-to-tweets-hashtags-and-all-things-twitter/

It goes through hashtags, Twitter chats, the basics, etc. Twitter would also be great fodder for a blog post in this course (if you are looking at doing others not recommended).

I hope this helps!

Alec

Hey everyone,

I had a student ask about how to identify the feed of the blog that you will use for this course. In the spirit of openness, I created a short screencast that should help.

See:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9N9E-8eecBAR0xDbG5oQXcyUW8/view?usp=sharing

The only problem with the video is that it cuts off the address bar so it doesn't show the address that you are supposed to send. however, if you follow the steps, you should be able to just send me the address that appears up above.

In the case of the example, it would either be http://couros.weebly.com/oltd-505 or (more directly) http://couros.weebly.com/1/feed which is the address you get when you click on the RSS feed link.

Make sense?

From that point, I will take your feeds and add them to http://oltd505.ca ... the posts that you will see there as of today are from last year's cohort.

If not, let me know!

Thanks!

Alec

Thanks Chris,  That is where it is found.  I saw the html code and didn't look in the address bar.

Hi ECMP 455,
For some reason, several of you have asked where class is tonight (March 3, 2015). It will be on Blackboard Collaborate at http://couros.ca/x/connect ... see you soon.

And btw, you will need your Twitter account tonight!

Hey ECMP 355 and 455! Instead of using Blackboard Collaborate next Tuesday, we are going to try something different called Blue Jeans.

To connect on Tuesday, go to https://bluejeans.com/944683432. Just type in your name and email address at the prompt. You won't need any passwords.

If you are connecting with your computer, choose browser. If you are on a phone, iPad or other Android tablet, click on mobile. You will see a link to an Android or iOS app that you can download.

I would STRONGLY suggest that you try this sometime before class. You can try it anytime. You can try it right now if you like.

You will need at least working audio and a webcam is STRONGLY recommended for this. If you don't have one, you could always use the ED computer lab. I believe there are webcams built-in. Of course, headphones are recommended when using a public lab.

Let us know if there are any other issues. See you soon. Have a great weekend!

We can't recommend Skott strongly enough. We had a great experience with Skott - we were taken through the numerous options, and these were explained in great detail. We feel confident that we got the best deal for us, with a low rate and the right payment options. And Skott was generous with his time, timely with his responses, and generally, just a great guy to do business with. We'll recommend Skott to all of our friends.
