Rewiring Local Democracy  -

Of several "register to vote online" messages, the following has been the most successful for Bradford Council. Feel free to copy it for your council:

Sunday morning checklist:
1) make cup of tea
2) register to vote: http://t.co/BXpZtgOlzo
3) drink cup of tea

Anyone else had a FOI request from Twitter UK asking for polling station data? If so, how have you responded?

Super, thanks so much!  I hope some of you from councils that have provided data will encourage those who are less keen :)

Slow Club - Trophy Room (BCB Session)

I'm uploading some of the session tracks I recorded while at BCB. This is the first.
Recorded by me at BCB 106.6FM in Bradford, 2008. This is one of three songs Slow Club did live in session at BCB. The other two were Thinking Drinking Sinking Feeling and When I Go. Studio version

Google is our homepage

I made this image for our web authors at +Bradford Council. 70% of recent website visits started at a search engine, so I wanted to help them think of this as the start of many a user journey.

Exactly three years ago I walked on Fox Glacier. I would not be able to do that today because the glacier has retreated too far to allow tourists onto it.
Exactly three years ago, on 18 February 2012, I walked on Fox Glacier. It was one of the most amazing days of my life, and I felt lucky to have had that experience. I didn't realise quite how lucky...

I want to get the +Bradford Council Twitter account verified, so we can have one of those lovely blue ticks.  Anybody got any advice on how to do it?

Twitter's support page suggests they "do not accept requests for verification from the general public."

I read something recently about a process for category 1 responders to get veriried.  But my memory has failed me, and I forget where I read it and what it said.

Looks like 38 councils have been verified as a result of sharing the info on how to apply :) Another few picked up the process last night so suspect the Cabinet Office will get another batch shortly! Good to see ticks appearing across local government.

Thanks +Viki Harris. That's a great idea about making video content available for those present to see and share.

In terms of our ban, this is why I posed the original question. I genuinely had no idea how typical, or untypical, our situation was, and therefore whether there was any point in me proposing a rethink. From what you and +Sarah Lay have said, it looks like there is merit in me starting a discussion about it at our place.

Using social media for emergencies

What plans do you have (or what experience have you had) of using social media during an emergency situation?

Would you use your main corporate Twitter account for emergency alerts? Or do you have a separate account for use in emergencies? Either way, what are your reasons?

I know that several councils have separate Twitter accounts for roads or winter weather and gritting. Which of these accounts would you use in an emergency?

Your suggestions are wise +Ben Proctor . I'll sit down the the emergency planning team and talk through some scenarios.  I suspect they already work closely with the LRF.

One thing I will add is that what technically counts as an emergency may not be the same as what our residents count as an emergency.  And the line between what is simply a service disruption and what is an emergency situation can be a blurry one.

Fascinating, thanks +Sarah Lay. That article supersizes what I was trying to say on my blog. That goes some way to explaining why my recent video was so successful. I seem to have accidentally ticked all the right boxes. ;)

Could it be that by the end of 2015 "creators" could include HTML in Facebook posts? That would further reduce the number of people who click out of Facebook.

I've had a look round the tunnels underneath Bradford city centre. This is what I saw. Apparently The Beatles, and maybe even Jimi Hendrix, performed down there.
