Strong science that didn’t get reported in the mainstream press.

http://easternblot.net/2013/10/17/the-science-that-didnt-make-the-news/

I need someone to write this every week - pick out the top 5 stories not covered in the news, give a quick overview and a link. (Preferably to an OA journal)
After last week's Article Level Metrics workshop, PLOS hosted a “data challenge” in their San Francisco offices. With datasets from PLOS, CrossRef, ImpactStory, Mendeley and Altmetrics, attendees got a few hours to tinker around and see what they could do with it.

UGH NO! http://googlereader.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/powering-down-google-reader.html

Barring Gmail, Reader is (was) my favourite Google product. I use it multiple times per day and it's one of only 4 Chrome extensions that I have shown permanently on my toolbar. Admittedly I only use it for the most basic functionality (ie. reading my fricking feeds), but thats why I stuck with it. I can't stand all the crap that alternatives shove at you. - looking at you feedly...

PSA: I've just upgraded my phone, and I need a new SIM for it. This means that my old sim will be out of commission for a few days, meaning that I won't get calls/texts. However I'll still get emails, tweets, G+, Skype, etc. Hit me up there if ya need me :)

Only XKCD could link to 4chan, the NASA compressive heating calculator and Cooking for Geeks in the same post: http://what-if.xkcd.com/28/

The rhyming suggestion is pretty neat

Any git ninjas know I'm getting "fatal: write error: No space left on device" when pushing to Github?

Ah. Never mind. Seems that attempting to deploy before pushing to the master branch breaks our internal workflow.

Great writeup of PLoS' ALM workshop: http://www.altmetric.com/blog/thoughts-from-the-fishbowl-plos-alm-workshop-2013

Good thoughts on moving the #altmetrics narrative from politicised language to a softer, more complementary approach

Really pretty good interview with Hixie on HTML5doctor: http://html5doctor.com/interview-with-ian-hickson-html-editor/

He even admits that one of the main reasons he implemented Web Sockets is that he wanted to control his model trains via the web :)
Hot on the heels of our interview with Robin Berjon, editor of HTML5 at W3C, over the weekend I interviewed Ian Hickson, editor of HTML “The Living Standard” at WHATWG and, arguably, the most influent...

Neat little resource to quickly get around the same-origin policy: http://corsproxy.com

Wouldn't use in production, but handy for demo/teaching purposes? Having quick access to apis when teaching JS seems like a neat use case.
Doesn't this open a security hole? No, for two reasons: The domain of the resource is corsproxy.com , so none of the user's cookies for the upstream domain are sent. We strip out Cookie headers, so ev...
