The thrill is gone http://flip.it/Wg37N

There are other positive emotions to cultivate in our lives. Thrill is indeed a temporary state. How would I label these other feelings about my work?
Of course it is. The definition of a thrill is temporary excitement, usually experienced for the first time. It's thrilling to ride a roller coaster. The fifth time you have to ride it, though, it's more than a chore, it's...

Canada can do better than current electoral system, minister says http://flip.it/FZGun

I certainly support electoral reform. In a two party system like the United States proportional representation might not be significant, but Canada should nurture its political diversities.
Democratic Institutions Minister Maryam Monsef says that there are some advantages to Canada's first-past-the-post electoral system, but changes can be made to allow for a higher voter turnout and public engagement.

Why green energy prospers as fossil fuel prices fall: Don Pittis http://flip.it/Ci9KQ

I was wondering how green energy was doing as prices fell. This is good to hear.
A U.S. report this week will show that despite the falling price of oil and natural gas, green energy has continued to grow. Technological advances and government action against climate change mean alternative power sources remain competitive and will become more so as fossil fuel prices rise.

This is great

My response to a viral Washington Post article making its way around the interwebz.
Her biggest issue, though, was with the silence. As she puts it, “My lively little kids stopped talking and adopted the bent-neck, plugged-in posture of tap, tap, swipe.” Imagine the same complaint with a book. "My lively kids stopped talking and adopted the bent-necked, lost in a book posture ...

A moment to feel hopeful.
Small groups of Syrian refugees began arriving in Canada from Lebanon this week as the government prepares to process greater volumes of asylum seekers.

Cathy Cassidy: we must all speak up for libraries http://flip.it/.63po

I became a library fanatic in middle school. I've always gone to libraries, but it wasn't till I was about twelve that reading became a passion.
Libraries are slipping away from us and unless we speak up for them and stand up for them, they will be gone, warns author Cathy Cassidy on the eve of National Libraries Day

Edmonton shoe store's 'no-veil' policy unlikely to withstand human rights challenge, lawyer says http://flip.it/x_sRC

Unless the person with a covered face is robbing the store at gun point, the objection to veil's is ridiculous.
The owner of an Edmonton shoe repair store who refused to serve a Muslim teen wearing a burka says his policy of not serving people who wear facial coverings has nothing to do with race.

"The new research also suggests a paradox: While blacks are significantly more likely than whites to be gun homicide victims, blacks are only about half as likely as whites to have a firearm in their home (41% vs. 19%). Hispanics are less likely than blacks to be gun homicide victims and half as likely as whites to have a gun at home (20%)."

It is what it is I guess. Some groups develop a purpose, others are not helping people network. I'm not going to worry about it too much.
