It was a bit of a shit-show, but The Cobalt proved a solid venue for this all-Vancouver show, the first sold out gig I've ever seen there. There persists many an online troll that still blames the current ownership for the landlord's unceremonious booting of the previous tenant, who had established the century-old hotel bar as a haven of punk and metal in the years following its storied tenure as a strip club.

Yet, despite the half-dozen years that have passed since the No Fun City documentary came out (which was coincidentally the same year as White Lung's debut album), its image as a punk-friendly venue remains largely intact. That perfectly skuzzy feeling is as embedded in the walls as the streaks of beer splatter and drag queen sweat, so one could hardly imagine a better setting in which to enjoy this ferocious bill.

Change can be difficult for anyone to accept, certainly so for Vancouver's punk scene, but the fact is that all the renovations and refurbishments in recent years have improved the Cobalt as a concert venue, just as the evolutionary approach to song-writing has made White Lung that much more dynamic and accessible. If their set was any indication, fans will have no trouble following them as they grow and evolve as artists. Anyone who doesn't wasn't much of a supporter anyway.

Diane Coffee perked me right up at The Cobalt on FEB.20.2016. Loved their last album, and they were even better live.

Finally got to scratch 'see David Cross live' off my bucket list, and damn glad that I did. I've been a big fan of his for about 17 years, so my expectations were high, but he lived up to them. Thanks to the +NorthWest Comedy Fest and +Exclaim Magazine for allowing me to fulfill this modest dream.
