This is something I wish I had had when I was a kid: better than even a chemistry set, it's the Gilbert U-238 Atomic Energy Lab. Yes, it's a genuine nuclear physics set for kids, with things like a Geiger counter, a cloud chamber, an electroscope, and a bunch of isotopes.

No, I'm not kidding; this looks like a great science set for kids, and it's no more dangerous than quite a lot of household goods. And there is something deeply and profoundly magical about learning this kind of physics. In a cloud chamber, you can actually see radioactive decays with your naked eye. And there are a bunch of experiments you can do where you're doing honest-to-god transmutation of the elements; I remember doing this with my undergrads many years ago, and enjoying the looks on their faces when they walked in to the lab and I told them that today we were going to make Silicon.

I'm really sad that they don't have things like this anymore. Kids' home science sets have been getting fairly weak lately -- if you look into the latest Edmunds Scientific catalogue, it looks more like a collection of science-themed toys than anything else. Actual chemistry, physics, or even electronics sets seem virtually impossible to get.

Maybe it's time to change this; do we need to start making real science sets designed for kids?
