This is a totally wacky idea from someone without a Physics degree, but here goes...

There are virtual particles creating quantum foam, happily jumping into existence then annihilating constantly. If there was even a tiny asymmetry: could that be enough to be a component of dark energy?

They could-unfortunately, if one does the calculation, one finds a result that is many orders of magnitude greater than the observed value of the cosmological constant, the simplest way to model dark energy and that, till now, is in agreement with the observations. Indeed this is what's called the ``problem of the cosmological constant''.
