Given that software is eating the world, swallowing up jobs, what should companies do in response? Can your company's product or service be replaced in the next few years by software?

And, more appropriate for here: As a company replaces jobs with software, what should they do with or for the displaced?

I think this is part of the current situation of increasing profits with little job growth. I also think that eventually simply laying people off will become untenable. How many companies can keep selling their wares if more and more of their customers are unemployed?

Where does a stock broker go work as soon as the software can do her job better? If all the cars are self driving (a software solution) what do taxi cabbies and truck drivers do?
