800 miles East of the South Pole?!? How does that work? The only direction you can go from the South Pole is North.

Nevertheless, I'll be following the Lake Vostok findings with great interest!
Yes, that was a misstep (a slight alarm bell went off when I wrote that,  which I should have heeded). I've fixed it to read 800 miles from the South Pole, in East Antarctica.
