I get asked very often how to be successful, what you need? What is the biggest asset:
The answer is Heart.
It still takes 20 hour days, it takes sweat, it takes a lot of heartache, it takes working from the ER, and rocking a newborn in the carseat on one hand and editing with the other while balancing a toddler on your knee. It takes staying when everyone tells you to run, it takes gumption, it takes loyalty, and it takes faith, in the universe, in yourself. It takes perseverance, and compassion, and selflessness hand in hand with self preservation. It takes the fucking courage to move your feet forward even when you can't see where you are going. It takes forgiveness, it takes dedication, it takes a lot of failures, and falls, and fractures before you even glimpse small successes. It takes hydration, it takes knowing when to stop and breathe, when to return to center, when to put love and family first and how to do that without losing momentum. It takes being ok with being selfish now and then. It takes character and integrity, it takes walking away from people you deeply love that are pouring poison into your well of passion... even if they are doing it unintentionally. It takes health, and self care of your body and mind, it takes a strong resolve and an indomitable spirit. It takes getting up, even when you can't.
It's about heart. A strong heart, a courageous heart, a ferocious heart, a kind and loving heart. It's about doing it when you don't want to ... in fact it doesn't count until it starts to hurt, until it's inconvenient, until its the last place you want to be. It's about passion and persistence and patience all in equal measure. It's about learning to take a punch, even when you don't want to battle, it's about knowing you don't always win but showing up to the fight anyway. It's about the storms, the darkness, the difficulties, the incline, and running towards that instead of the clear skies, and easy paths, and calm waters, because only one teaches you skill, teaches you resolve, teaches you survival.
It's heart that sees you through when your sick, when your sad, when your failing, when you're broken, or just plain broke. It's heart that gets you up before the bell sounds, it's heart that gives you the strength to hold on, to fight the current, to make it to shore. It's heart that gives you perspective, that gives you intuition, that gives you hope. It's heart that is seeking the beacon of passion. It's heart that leads you into your greater purpose.
It's heart that you leave on the canvas, within the notes, on the battlefield, in the things you are building, the things you create, the things you love. It's heart that puts you into your work, your family, your artistry, your life. It's heart that finds a way while fear is seeking an excuse. It's heart that makes you step off the branch before you've tested your wings, it's heart that pulls you to your feet when you hit the ground and brushes you off before you try again.
It's heart pumping all that courage, and chaos, and beauty, and strength, and passion, and fierceness through your veins. It's heart that connects you to the consciousness of the world and offers itself as a receiving point for what is needed from you in your existence and time here.
It's heart. In the absence of heart we cease to be... to be willing, to be able, to be fearless, to be kind, to be existential, to be miraculous, to be brave, to be more. In the absence of heart we die. And some of us ignore our spiritual heart with same disregard we have for our physical one, faithfully, tirelessly keeping us alive, coursing oxygen and blood through our bodies without recognition, without thanks, without a second thought given to it until it ceases functioning. Heart is the life of us, so we can be the heart of our lives...
You want it... put your heart into it... that is how you give life, to people, to relationships, to ambitions, to hopes, to anything, to anyone.
Every tool, every resource, every skill, every opportunity... it is meaningless in the absence of heart.
