All of us at Ottawa's Oxford University Society are grateful to Susan le Jeune d'Allegeersghecque, the UK's High Commissioner, for joining us at our annual alumni dinner. She spoke on the evolution of diplomacy, from the 19th century's balletic Congress of Vienna to today's whirling 24hour news cycle ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง https://maharaj.ca/2DctcQS

I look forward to being part of the University of Guelph's upcoming Equine Industry Symposium. Last year's inaugural symposium was a great success in bringing together individuals, groups, and institutions from across the Canadian horse community, to create common purpose in our infamously fragmented sector. This year's theme is "Joining Forces on Youth Engagement: Recruitment, Retention, Succession" ๐Ÿด https://maharaj.ca/2FnLKLh

The Ottawa Valley is now colder than both the South Pole and the North Pole. At our farm in Almonte, the temperature dropped overnight to -32ยบC (-42ยบC with the wind chill). Penguins and polar bears can take comfort in the fact that they live in Antarctic and Arctic desolations, instead of in the harsher climate of Canada's national capital ๐Ÿง https://maharaj.ca/2lm7mP2

I was more astonished than I could express that Governor Matt Bevin has commissioned me as a Kentucky Colonel, for services to global affairs and to international equestrianism. This is Kentucky's highest state honour, and carries no military obligations. Candidly, I do not feel entirely deserving of the accolade, but I will do my best to reflect positively on the state, its people, and my fellow Kentucky Colonels ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ https://maharaj.ca/2DqVF1Q

The Oxford University Society in Ottawa will hold our annual dinner on 11 January 2018. Our guest speaker will be the UK High Commissioner to Canada, Susan le Jeune d'Allegeersghecque, who will address "the British situation". It must be a challenge to diplomats to describe Brexit and the state of British politics, while confining themselves to sedate language ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง https://wp.me/p8tpZf-4W

I am delighted to serve as a member of the Transparency International (TI) global network of anti-corruption experts. TI has assembled quite a stellar group, and I am honoured to be named alongside them ๐ŸŒŽ https://maharaj.ca/TIExperts

I joined Observer Radio to discuss parliamentary integrity systems, in light of new revelations of multi-million dollar holdings by Robin Yearwood, a serving MP and former leader of the Antigua & Barbuda Labour Party. The country's parliamentarians are not required to publicly disclose their assets and interests, making it impossible for citizens and journalists to monitor them for conflicts of interest, influence peddling, and illicit accumulation of wealth. It amounts to an open invitation to corruption by the political class ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฌ https://maharaj.ca/2BoHXyo

I attended a discussion on North Korea, led by Bruce Klingner, the Central Intelligence Agencyย (CIA)'s former Deputy Division Chief for Korea. He was refreshingly candid, but I remain uncertain if the greater threat to us all comes from recklessly irrational political actors, or from sociopathically rational actors. I am grateful to our hosts, the United States Embassy and the Macdonald-Laurier Institute ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ https://maharaj.ca/2ATGNYY

I spent two days with my colleagues at the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA); they worked through their Christmas celebrations to help plan next steps for the WADA Governance Working Group. The past week brought us momentous decisions on enforcing consequences for systemic doping at the Olympics, and the next few weeks will bring similarly far-reaching decisions for the Paralympics ๐Ÿ… https://maharaj.ca/2eJ9NaH

I spent a day in Bonn with my colleagues on the IPC Independent Task Force, developing recommendations for the International Paralympic Committe, on Russian participation in the 2018 PyeongChang Games. The International Olympic Committee announced its own decision on Russia the following day ๐Ÿ… https://maharaj.ca/2zTIc08
