Introduction
Year-round bike commuter in Portland, Oregon. Perpetually curious about humans, technology, transportation, the arts and the future.

I've been taking helmet camera stills of my Portland rides since May 2013. All #helmetography taken using a Contour Roam2 helmet camera set to intervelometer mode. The camera automatically snaps a photo every three seconds. I can only change the interval or switch to video by plugging the camera into my computer, but that has never been a hindrance. I usually wear the helmet camera pointing backwards. The camera looks like a cylindrical light, so most people don't realize that I've got a camera on my head.

I tried a GoPro Hero 4 because it offers 12-megapixel stills (compared to the Roam2's 5-megapixels), you can shoot photos manually as well as automatically, and you can change settings in the camera itself, on the fly. I wound up returning the GoPro because the quality of the photos was washed out and overexposed, even after I adjusted settings to accommodate sunlight. When sunlight hits the lens directly, the photos appear hazy and faded. I liked the ease of use of the GoPro, but the photo quality just wasn't good enough compared to the Contour Roam2.

All my non-helmet photography is taken with either a Sony a5000 digital SLR or an iPhone.

Cycling barefoot in winter. I wonder why? Totally normal bike equipped with lights and a mirror and panniers and possibly even bar mitts. The guy seemed rather grumpy, sighing a lot and trying to pass everyone even though his feet kept slipping off the pedals. Maybe he lost a bet at work or was paying penance for stealing his neighbor's goat or something. #helmetography

Took my hurt right leg to the sports doctor today (the sore, over-exerted left one came along for the ride). The great news is I have no joint injuries from my slip on the ice a month ago. I do have a hip strain and apparently I have very flexible hips and hamstrings that need strengthening so I stop relying so heavily on my quads and knees. So I'm going to do physical therapy and get my strength evened out. Yay! I am relieved and pleased to have a course of action.

Ride Reports/Mileage  -

Groundhog Day ride report: rolled out of my house just in time to observe a wasted guy belligerently lecturing a tree “I don’t play games and I don’t like French people.” The rest of the ride was sunny, cold, heavy on the traffic, thankfully light on pavement frost, and there was a sliver of moon hanging high up in the sky.

It's always great to see friends in the bike lane, especially on a cold, gray day! #helmetography

It's been 4 weeks since I slipped on the ice (walking) and pulled my right quadriceps. Since then I've continued bike commuting because riding in low gear is the only thing that makes it feel better besides icing twice a day. Walking on flat ground is okay for short distances. Sitting is the worst. The pain seems to migrate around from hip to knee and since I'm not supposed to stretch and risk reinjuring it (which I did already), I'm getting kind of stiff and sore. Now my other leg is starting to hurt because it's been compensating. I'm going to a sports doc on Wednesday to get assessed and hopefully figure out a course of action to get better. I'm getting impatient, so a plan will be helpful. In the grand scheme of things, this is small potatoes, but I miss riding fast and taking big walks and not hurting. Grrrrr.

Thanks so much, everyone. You're all very kind and I feel much less whiney after reading your comments. +Lonnie Wormley I am hoping to be prescribed PT. I have a great chiropractor, but I need guidance on what I should do myself to get better. +GT North I confess I giggled hearing about your spilt milk. I am really glad you were not hurt. And come to think of it, I have some Yak Trax somewhere. I will dig them out next time Portland freezes. +Simon Frith foam rollers and tennis balls for sure. Of course I overdid it on both, but in moderation, they are great.

Recipes  -

Today's recipe for lunch is takeout (takeaway for those of you in the UK). Soon I shall acquire a delicious Bowl of the Gods from the Kure juice bar (https://kurejuicebar.com/menu/). This animated gif has nothing to do with my lunch, but it is pretty funny so I thought I would share it with you.

+Peter Warton I hear ya. I've spent some time in Vancouver. This sort of extended grey weather can really have an impact on your mood.

Tips & Tricks  -

So, bike commuters, let's share tips for emergency grooming. What are your best workarounds for making yourself presentable when you get to work and realize you have forgotten to....
I'll start: when I get to work and realize I have forgotten to make my hair look less like a wild animal, I get a pencil and part my hair neatly (leaves less of a mark on your scalp than a pen), then pour a little water from my water bottle on my head and finger comb my hair into vague respectability. This works really well when you work in IT where co-workers don't pay much attention to appearance to begin with.

Everything about Cibo is just so right that I keep going back there. The food is terrific (excellent ingredients, expertly prepared), the service is excellent and the design of the restaurant is both stylish and relaxed. My favorites are the Insalata di Polpo (grilled octopus over fried potatoes and arugula salad) and the roasted cannelini beans. The pizzas are great too, and they make a fantastic hot toddy.

Insultingly expensive mediocre to bad wine. We tried a Chardonnay, a Tempranillo and a Riesling. The first two were just okay. The Riesling was undrinkable (unanimous agreement by all four people who tried it). Beware of the first price on the menu, which seems reasonable for a glass, but is actually for a small taste of wine. The cheapest glass of wine is $13, and it's not a very generous pour. Too bad, as it's a cute neighborhood place that I was prepared to like.
