Two years after spotting the peak of Rysy, the highest point in Poland, located on the border with Slovakia, from the beauty of Morskie Oko, I finally made the ascent I thought I'd never be able to make. Several months of getting into shape, a month of planning, a couple of warmup climbs in the preceding days, and we were finally ready. It was a long day - up at 5am, arriving at Lysa Polana before 6am, and then walking/climbing/staggering a mile up - yes a mile up into the sky! - to get this shot and others from the summit of Rysy just before 2pm. Thankfully the 4 hour descent into Slovakia was mostly downhill ;) I'm going back again this summer for more photos - it's an incredibly beautiful place.

Pinnacle

I can only describe my first summit of Rysy as sheer exhilaration, where a thumping heart combined with jelly legs and shaking arms culminated in a sigh of release, joy and perhaps a few tears of the same.

Two years ago when I had the good fortune to see Morskie Oko and the beauty of the Tatras, there was only one thing on my mind - Rysy.  There are many, many fantastic vistas to be sought on the Poland/Slovakia border, but for me this was purely about challenging myself... to push myself, challenge myself, bury many demons.  A chance to conquer shattered confidence, fear of failure, to achieve in spite of less than ideal physique, being diabetic, being terrified of heights.  Oh what a rush you gave me when I reached your peak!!!

I was lucky enough to gain the advice of a very special person (+Wieczna Tułaczka ) to give me ideas on routes and times.  If you have the opportunity, please take a look at her page and website. I achieved my dream.  In time too - we got down into Slovakia in time to catch the train and subsequent bus back to Zakopane :)  Thank you VERY much, my dear :)

This photo from the top, looking into Slovakia.  Yes, we went up the hard way in Poland :) and yes, I managed to let go long enough to take a photo :) and perhaps to wipe a tear from an old, sentimental eye :)

Barcelona!

Stitched pano of 3 handheld shots not long before sunset from the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya looking over the Magic Fountain toward the Plaza de Espana. What an incredibly amazing place, a piece of me will stay there forever.
