As you guys may remember, but I'm sure you don't <3, I'm from Argentina, and I used to pirate a bunch of stuff, from windows, random software to games and music. At the moment, for me, when I was 10 to 16 yo, it was almost IMPOSSIBLE to not only find and get an original game, but also if you did, you had to pay the game with your soul and both your legs to buy the damn game. Then I started working (as early as 15) as a web dev and started to make some money, it got me my first gaming pc at the time and I started buying games, you know why? Convenience and availability.
At that time Steam was starting to be good and bought the Valve Complete Pack at that time, my first original game! Then I started to buy all my games and some of my software, and I committed to that new way of consuming stuff.
But I put myself a few rules: 1. If its easily available to me in my country; 2. If the price is not over exaggerated for my country currency-realvalue relationship; 3. If its not overpriced per se.
For example, I wanted to buy the Wasting Light album but I wasn't able to buy it from iTunes at the time and a real disc (which arrived a month or two later) was priced at like 10USD extra than online, fuck that, I torrented the shit out of it the same day it came out on the US.
I still have one of my pcs with a pirated win7 copy, because I CAN'T BUY THE DAMN THING ONLINE FROM ARGENTINA, WTF MICROSOFT. Also, the price, here, is extremely excessive now that they do allow buying win8.1 (they started offering it on feb this year :S!) I still use a pirated copy of Photoshop, because fuck the price damn it (and it's not my work tool). But I bought a bunch of games and software that I do need and use on a daily basis, like Sublime Text.
But then, let me get you into perspective. A web dev average salary in the states is around 4 to 5k USD, at least from what I gathered online, here in Argentina the average is around 9 to 10k ARS (not exact). With a 5k USD salary, you can buy 100 games priced at 50 USD each. When you convert the currency (with taxes and such because it's a shitty country in that end) with a 10k ARS salary you can buy around 15 games priced at 50 USD (~700ARS) and damn that's EXPENSIVE for a game. If I were to use the 1USD/hour Spool's rule, I'm fucked, like really really fucked. So, because of the availability and pricing mechanism in Argentina, I'd say about 75% to 90% of the people pirate EVERYTHING, from movies to music to games to whatever they can, and I truly believe this is publisher's fault. So yeah, that's why people in not-so-great countries pirate everything, and it's sad. There have been a few advances in this issue, with Google Play extending the markets, Steam being more cheap than ever, etc. but there's still a lot of room to improve a long long way to go.
