New finding to treat liver fibrosis
Liver fibrosis occurs when stellar cells produce substances to patch injuries. When the liver cannot be repaired correctly, the scar tissue remains and may give rise to liver fibrosis. Scientists discovered the protein endosialin is on the stellar cells and is involved in the scarring process. When researchers genetically inactivated the endosialin gene on stellar cells, animals developed less liver fibrosis after liver damage. Additionally it also improved liver’s regeneration without influencing cell proliferation and liver size. Scientists believe this process also occurs the same way in the human liver and foresee a clinical application of these findings.
