We're still writing!

Robert Hooke was 'England's Leonardo' — a physicist, naturalist, and architect. He even dabbled in geology. His physics of springs led ultimately to the wave equation and seismic rock physics. Weirdly, we don't even know what he looked like...

A small round-up, just for Google Plus! Check out today's tech/geo news post, a report from India, my talk on open mobile technology, and more. I won't post all the links, but here's a couple:

What's new, to us anyway, is thermogeophysics — looking for hot rock with (mostly) seismic data. +Evan Bianco reports from a meeting earlier this month...
Earlier this month I spent an enlightening week in Colorado at a peer review meeting hosted by the...

Total's totally amazing new supercomputer, Nova Scotia's latest offshore promise, and augmented reality — it's Agile's geoscience news post... now down to a monthly ration.
News of the week was maybe a little ambitious, so we're going to scale back to a monthly post. The same sort of news — technology with subsurface application. Whatever catches our beady eyes, real...

Evan tells all about Trace Integration, the little seismic attribute that could. It's cheap and cheerful, but I've seen it do better than full-on, wide-azimuth AVO inversion, so it's always worth checking out. After semblance (coherence or whatever), it's the next cube I compute in a new project.

I just wrote a short post to introduce a new Cheatsheet (see link below). I still don't know what to do... If Agile should G+ it, or if +Matt Hall should, or if I should +1 on +Fernando Enrique Ziegler's post (why the heck doesn't he show up when I type that? He's even in my circles), or if I should share his post, or comment on it... This I why I like Twitter :)

Every couple of weeks, +Evan Bianco and I write up some geosciencey and/or technology-ey news. This week there's lots of Canadian content, plus a video from +Ron Schott showing off some free technology for creating 3D photographs.

+Evan Bianco is in Colorado at the SEG's new IQ Earth Forum, a proto-conference for seismic interpreters. There are only about 50 people there this year, but plenty of interesting discussion (he tells me — I'm just keeping up via Twitter and Skype). Read his thoughts on the first two days.

Thus the importance of quantifying the financial impact of uncertainties.
Not only through classic risk assessment methodology but also using more innovative workflows.
And there is an ultimate challenge: reconciliate uncertainties with top management. Despite their claims, at the end, they want one single figure. A lot of education has to be done there.

Don't miss +Evan Bianco's post last week about the power of checklists. Can they work in applied geoscience? I think perhaps they can for those thorny or fiddly workflows like AVO-friendly processing, well ties, and core description.

Is there a role for checklists in applied geoscience, or the petroleum industry in general? +Evan Bianco starts the conversation in today's blog post.

What do you think? I'd love to see one for seismic processing, and maybe even for seismic QC in new interpretation projects. Maybe I'll cook one up myself. I bet BP have one for deepwater drilling operations!
Avoidable failures are common and persistent, not to mention demoralizing and frustrating, acros...

This time last week, Evan was in New York exploring his inner entrepreneurial psyche with Seth Godin, master and commander of the SS Digital Revolution. Now he's back and I think he's a different person.

Seriously, I think he's actually a different person. Godin is up to something...

Last week +Brian Romans noticed that quite a few people were writing, quite coincidentally, about sand dunes. Aeolian's not exactly my specialty, but there was one thing I've been wanting to write about for a while...
