Microneedling wtih The SkinPen® - A Completely Natural and Absolutely Effective Skin Rejuvenation Treatment
By Sharon M. Sneed, PhD

Have you ever watched your lawn being aerated in the spring?  They go over the entire surface of dry, dead,  grass, poke thousands of hole in the ground and then fill them with restorative fertilizers, nutrients and water that make your lawn flourish and become the envy of the neighborhood within a few months.  Take that down to micro size and imagine a miniature version of this on your face and you now understand the concept and miracle of The SkinPen®.

Microneedling has become wildly popular in spas over the last year, but The SkinPen® offers the most advanced microneedle cartridge system in the industry today and promises great results for many types of patients.  A skilled practitioner will be able to stimulate your own skin’s natural ability to produce new collagen and elastin for healthier and younger looking skin.

You might be wondering, “Who is a candidate for this simple process?” Basically, almost anyone and everyone, because it is just so natural and relatively non-invasive.  It can be used on all skin types, all colors of skins, all age groups, and most skin areas of the body that require regeneration or an intense repair process.  The SkinPen® is especially useful on the face, neck, and chest areas, as well as the arms, hands, legs, abdomen and back.  It excels at improving acne scars and stretch marks, which are difficult to treat otherwise.
The next logical question I had when this procedure was performed on me was, “How long does it take?”  Usually, it will take 15-30 minutes depending on the size of area to be treated.  A face can be finished in about fifteen minutes of actual treatment time.  A whole set of abdominal and flank stretch marks, perhaps more like thirty minutes.  Another perk is that for a seriously effective treatment, it does not hurt much!  Yeah – always a good thing.  If you do struggle with discomfort during the procedure, then our medical team can evaluate you for a calming medication.  However, most people are able to handle this treatment with no problem after we apply a topical anesthetic.  And, downtime is minimal to none.  You might be red for a ciuple days and we don’t want you to wear makeup the first day after the procedure, but it is not going to interfere with your life.  Plan at least one week ahead of needing to look your best, and you will be in great shape for this exciting treatment.

The course of treatment is a series of three procedures, spread out in one month intervals.  Not too bad of a schedule for the terrific and transforming results we know that you will see.  For patients with more severe issues, there is really no limit to the number of times you can do this procedure.  EVERY TIME YOU DO THIS, THERE IS A BENEFIT TO YOUR SKIN that will help it to look less scarred, less aged and less damaged.

Most clients ask when they will see the peak of results.  In our experience, clients are usually ecstatic about their results within as little as a week, but the natural repair process can take several weeks to see the peak result.  It takes some time to remodel collagen and any treatment of this type can take up to six months to achieve the final result.

Stay tuned to part two of this blog – “should I do micopenning with or without PRP?”  You’ll have to read chapter two to get the answers to that important question.

Melasma is a very common patchy brown, tan, or blue-gray facial skin discoloration, almost entirely seen in women in the reproductive years. It typically appears on the upper cheeks, upper lip, forehead, and chin of women 20-50 years of age. Although possible, it is uncommon in males. Over 90% of those with melasma are women. It is thought to be primarily related to external sun exposure, external hormones like birth control pills, and internal hormonal changes as seen in pregnancy.
