This is one of the first photos I took with my first DSLR in a small village in Hong Kong by the coast, a very beautiful spot for sunset. I would go there often with friends or by myself. Once I went on a weekday alone and while I was busy taking pictures, I made a wrong turn and got myself stuck in the mud, and it seemed that I could not pull myself out, and it would be high tide soon... I looked around and saw a guy walking close by, and I waved for him to come over to help me. He tried for a while, it was impossible to pull me out with his power alone..he thus decided to call the police for help, the person who answered the emergency call asked him in return what should she do? should she refer the case to the fire department...My helper started screaming into the phone, "I do not care who you call, get help, the tides are coming in soon, 2 person lives are in danger.." So we waited for our rescue ( or should I say my rescue for he alone could get himself out from the mud, it was me, who was in trouble..." He told me to put my arms around his neck, hold on to his arms.. pull his cloths...no matter what I could not have the power to get myself out..the time was passing, the sky was getting dark, the tides was coming in, all of a sudden we saw a fisherman boat passing by, my helper screamed HELP, the boat ignored us first..and continued on its way, he scrammed again louder, " Two person's lives are in danger!!!!!! Please Help us!!!" The boat stopped, a man came out and starred at us, after a moment, he pulled a big stick out from his cabin and with this he came over to us so fast, almost like flying through the water/mud...he put his arm around me and in no time, I was out of the mud, I wanted to thank him but he turned around and left in same speed as he came...disappeared into the night sky. Just at this moment, the police came, it was a special rescue unite, together with the fire engine and an ambulance, a team of twenty something people ...They helped me to the shore, wrapped me up with a blanket, I was all covered with mud, and they asked the villagers for water and took this sheets of the ambulance for me to clean up, the villagers did not realize anyone was in trouble, the police asked me, " Miss, why didn't you scream ?" " you got to learn to scream for help... go home and watch more TV...learn how to scream HELP" My helper was very kind, he waited by me and made sure I was ok, it seemed that the boat that helped me was a Chinese boat that had came over to Hong Kong perhaps illegally, since this village is close to the broader, and we could see China from across the bay. Even after cleaning, I still had mud all over my body, my helper put me on a bus home, I sat there in a corner wet and muddy, totally exhausted but still have my camera in my hands....throughout the entire time, I never let go of my camera...it was too bad I missed the sunset that day. After I got home, I told this story to my friend, he said to me, " you must be careful, always check the tides and always carry a flashlight with you!" years later, on my birthday, he gave me a very expansive Flashlight with SOS signals on it, he called it LB20 and said," perhaps, some day, in an emergency, or an earthquake, it could save your life."
Thank you, +Trey Ratcliff for liking this old photo, it was taken in Hong Kong.
