Cora is a 10 month old female Labrador Retriever dog with a history of being hit by car 10 days ago and persistent paraparesis. Survey radiographs suggested possible collapse of the L5 vertebra. CT of the lumbar spine confirmed an L5 vertebral fracture resulting in 3 discrete fragments best appreciated using 2D multiplanar reformatted images. Modern helical CT scanners create a volume of data that can be reconstructed from the originally obtained axial orientation into any other imaging plane, including both sagittal and coronal planes. 2D multiplanar reformatted images confidently demonstrated the nature of
the vertebral fracture resulting in Cora’s symptoms. Furthermore CT evaluation confirmed the lack of concurrent spinal cord compression by the vertebral fragments. The information provided by CT evaluation allowed confident surgical planning for intervention resulting in vertebral fracture stabilization.
