Colorado's Flatlands & Scenic Diversions

Heading out into the Rockies Foothills this weekend we decided to take the alternative route through the beginning of Colorado's plains or rural-flatlands, being there early enough meant we had some fleeting amazing light across vast fields spotted with giant trees, a stark juxtaposition yet equally picturesque scene to the nearby majestic mountains :-)

Glacier National Park Subtle Reflections

In what was a total contrast to the previous day full of roaring winds, rain & a solid day of hiking we were presented with the gorgeous subtle reflections of Mt Bear in Glacier's Cosley Lake. We were told the red rock on the summit was sacred to the native Indians due to the high number of lightning strikes thanks to the iron oxide content in the rocks.

Fiery Skies Over Glacier National Park

Patience is your friend in Landscape Photography -  in what amounts to a perfect example of returning to the same location over multiple days, I was able to capture the gorgeous colours in this image only after a previous day of bland greys & lack of clouds.

Taken in the stunning Glacier National Park over Lake McDonald from West Glacier, Montana.

St Andrews Beach

A recent trip back home to Australia meant i had a brief opportunity to photograph some of her stunning beaches, this one unbelievably was completely devoid of people as far as the eye could see, it was just me, the beach, a gorgeous sunset and the Sis impatiently waiting ;-)

This shot was all about timing & getting the right light, i also used a 0.9 GND filter to darken the sky whilst retaining detail in the foreground.  Processing in LR5 & Photoshop to bring out the contrast in the sand and sky :-)

Polar Vortex Over Rocky Mountain National Park

This is one of my fav shots from the recent B&W challenge, taken from the amazing Rocky Mountain National Park.  The recent polar vortex meant an insane amount of snow was being dumped in the mountains so we had to venture out - in bitterly cold conditions mind you ;-)  That said (and you'll hear it often) this precisely the time you want to head out and take photos.  This image was all about tonal contrast and depicting the dynamic nature of the day, its also a blend of 4 exposures to deal with the extended dynamic range of the scene.

Dry Creek Falls

Gorgeous waterfalls in the lush Columbia River Gorge.  As with most other falls in the Gorge each has its own unique presence.  This was a multiple exposure blend to compensate for the dynamic range, final editing in LR & Photoshop

Gorgeous Grindelwald / First Switzerland.  A recent trip to the very pretty Lauterbrunnen & Grindelwald valleys amazed us with its epic vistas and majestic mountains.  This is a 5 shot hand-held HDR to accommodate the vast dynamic range in the scene.

Magical Mesa Arch

Its funny how things can loom much larger in the mind than in reality, after a 4am start (still not early enough mind you) i still found myself racing to get to this wonderful spot prior to sunrise, then finally making it there to see how "tiny" Mesa Arch is compared to my minds-eye version!

That said i was equally amazed at how stunning the scene was and capped of a wonderful road trip to Arches & Canyonlands National Parks!
