A friend of mine shared this letter from her sister-in-law. Please help if you can, every bit counts.
"As many of you know already, and for those that don't, a year and a half ago Adam (my husband) suffered severe permanent brain damage from PML (progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy) as a rare side effect of a medication he was taking to manage his Crohn's disease.
We've both been through a lot since March of 2011, and there's a long, complicated road ahead of us. However, one of the major roadblocks that we haven't been able to overcome is something that our friends and family may be able to help us out with. Adam was in grad school for so long, he does not have enough work credits to qualify for Social Security Disability, though he's plenty disabled enough. The only way for him to qualify (trust me on this... I've tried everything), is for him to work to earn enough income to give him the credits he needs to qualify. This is a difficult thing to do because of all of the limitations (aphasia, inability to read, impaired vision and hemiparesis to name a few) with which the PML has left him.
However, he's recently started drawing pictures with colored pencils at home.
So... long story short, we're starting up a small business for him through etsy.com
selling prints and greeting cards, etc. online so that he can earn self-employment income. We're getting close to being able to share the links to his stores on these two websites - hopefully in about a week or two - so keep an eye out as I'll be posting them here.
If you feel that you are able to, please consider supporting Adam in our effort to get him the benefits he requires. Thank you!"
