This is one of the biggest and most important changes I've witnessed inside Google in my 5+ years there. I've personally watched everyone mentioned in this article--especially my good friend +Brett Lider--go from being frustrated outsiders when I joined to firmly in the driver's seat now. And the results speak for themselves.

When I first stated working on circles with +Andy Hertzfeld, he lamented that his previous attempts to use animation in UI at Google were smacked down for "wasting time". We pushed the envelope despite internal pressure to the contrary, but with the success of material design, it's clear the rules have now changed for good.

As an engineer who believes in the power of good design, I couldn't be happier.

There are 5 things I think are essential in a hotel - responsiveness of the staff, the aesthetics and comfort of the room, internet facility, food (breakfast really) and other forms of convenience (location, parking space etc). On all accounts the hotel was outstanding. The most amazing thing for us was that we booked a room for two but at the last minute decided to bring our 4 year old daughter along. My wife sent them an email the night prior to check in - no follow up call, nothing. We got there and they had already switched us to a bigger room with an extra bed at no extra cost. The lady at the reception was especially friendly and welcoming. Great experience in all!

Free WiFi available - that alone makes an Airport excellent for me. I know it's not the only thing that matters but it's about the most important thing to me. I hate my almost monthly trips through Heathrow for this reason - waiting without WiFi is a pain.

Nice and serene environment. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, situated perfectly. Nice room and good service. Nothing memorable but nothing to complain about apart from the internet which wasn't quite straightforward to set up.
