In my new job, the office 'radio' is a computer that mostly plays tunes via Pandora. It's convenient, however, I've done my own double-blind tests of it's efficacy in meetings its claims of serving up music I would like and found them to be unjustified.
I know why.
Using only the music genome project algos is akin to using a algo to find food you might like, only the algo just goes on, say, what the food looks
like. Music is deeply multi-modal. The myopic fixation on harmonic analysis that the euro-classical tradition typifies goes part of the way to explaining Pandoras poverty.
However, it's the best of a bad bunch right now, so I'll keep using it, also, at least one staff member has a paid account, which gives us the higher bit-rate (not that we have time to notice the difference). http://www.pandora.com/
