The Veldt by Ray Bradbury

The Veldt was a short story written by the pioneering sci-fi writer Ray Bradbury in 1950. It had something like a holodeck long before Star Trek TNG came along. An initially idyllic smart home environment turns rather dark. Most recommended if you haven't read it.

The Veldt is part of The Illustrated Man collection:

Here is a deadmau5 music video that was inspired by The Veldt and dedicated to Ray Bradbury.

I bought a Nexus 4 phone a couple of weeks ago for £239 but was rueing my luck when Google announced a price cut of the Nexus 4 to £159 last Wednesday. Luckily I used the the Google Play price protection to get a refund of the difference. This was confirmed today, so a big thumbs up to Google. If anyone else is in the same situation, check out:

Indie Game: The Movie

I watched this documentary film last night and it was fantastic. Has anyone else watched it? It captures emotions and motivations that a lot of programmers will relate to.

Trailer embedded below. Buy the downloadable DRM-free 1080p movie for $10 from:

Sad to see Microsoft are killing Microsoft Reader. I haven't used it much but its history is interesting. In the late 90's the Reader team invented the ClearType technology, which is a clever use of sub-pixels to render smoother text:

Co-creator of ClearType Bill Hill talks about it and other typography/screen issues in this podcast:
