The Veldt by Ray Bradbury

The Veldt was a short story written by the pioneering sci-fi writer Ray Bradbury in 1950. It had something like a holodeck long before Star Trek TNG came along. An initially idyllic smart home environment turns rather dark. Most recommended if you haven't read it.

The Veldt is part of The Illustrated Man collection:

Here is a deadmau5 music video that was inspired by The Veldt and dedicated to Ray Bradbury.

I bought a Nexus 4 phone a couple of weeks ago for £239 but was rueing my luck when Google announced a price cut of the Nexus 4 to £159 last Wednesday. Luckily I used the the Google Play price protection to get a refund of the difference. This was confirmed today, so a big thumbs up to Google. If anyone else is in the same situation, check out:

Indie Game: The Movie

I watched this documentary film last night and it was fantastic. Has anyone else watched it? It captures emotions and motivations that a lot of programmers will relate to.

Trailer embedded below. Buy the downloadable DRM-free 1080p movie for $10 from:

Yeah, it was more interesting and well done than I thought it would be. When I heard about its kickstarter background, I was expecting a poorly made movie. But it was surprisingly well done.

Not sure if it matters which Amazon country site you get it from but here is the Amazon UK link, which worked for me:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gutenberg-Geek-Kindle-Single-ebook/dp/B007EI62I0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1335537977&sr=8-1

Today, Gutenberg the Geek is free on Amazon. All I ask: pass it on here.

'Healthy' drinks contain more sugar than we realise

I heard a BBC Radio 5 piece today about the benefit (or otherwise) of drinking a lot of fruit juice. They were talking about the research discussed in this article:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/9208352/Healthy-drinks-contain-more-sugar-than-we-realise.html

If I recall correctly, the BBC also talked to Zoe Hardcombe (author of "The Obesity Epidemic"). She made the point that fruit juice is basically a vitamin C pill with loads of sugar. She also criticised the 5-a-day fruit mantra, which was a marketing campaign dreamt up by about by 20 fruit & veg companies at a meeting in California in 1991. Her message is to maintain a balanced diet - fruit & veg alone will give you nowhere near enough nutrients. Read more about her views in this thought provoking article:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/food/article-1349960/5-day-fruit-vegetables-myth-claims-nutrition-expert.html
Drinks often regarded as healthy can contain far more sugar than we think, scientists have warned.

Paul Graham's interesting contrarian "Do Things That Don't Scale" technology/startup essay:
http://paulgraham.com/ds.html
July 2013. One of the most common types of advice we give at Y Combinator is to do things that don't scale. A lot of would-be founders believe that startups either take off or don't. You build something, make it available, and if you've made a better mousetrap, people beat a path to your door as ...

Hack your body with the "Fitness for Geeks" book, which is talked about in this Wired article:

Welcome to Geek Fitness Week! Getting in shape isn't just for the contributors of jockdad.com. I think there's this misconception that geeks are just sitting around with an X-Large drink in one hand a...

Sad to see Microsoft are killing Microsoft Reader. I haven't used it much but its history is interesting. In the late 90's the Reader team invented the ClearType technology, which is a clever use of sub-pixels to render smoother text:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ClearType
Co-creator of ClearType Bill Hill talks about it and other typography/screen issues in this podcast:
http://thisdeveloperslife.com/post/2-0-5-typo
ClearType is a trademark for Microsoft's implementation of subpixel rendering technology. ClearType attempts to improve the appearance of text on certain types of computer display screens by sacri...

Some background to Black-Scholes, including discussion with Myron Scholes:

It's not every day that an equation changes the world, but one made modern options trading possible - and arguably caused the financial crash.

Bootstrap CSS/HTML library from Twitter

http://twitter.github.com/bootstrap/

I've been playing around with Bootstrap and I'm impressed. It makes it really easy to create elegant web pages and web UI's. For most of the functionality you just need to include one CSS file and then apply a single style to an element for each effect. It includes responsive grids, layouts, buttons, icons, forms and lots more. Bootstrap is open source under the Apache licence, which means it can freely be used in commercial apps/sites.
