Muzei 2.0

+Ian Lake and I just published Muzei 2.0, complete with a watch face for Android Wear (requires the Android 5.0 update for Android Wear)! Additionally, we've added:

• Saturation slider in advanced settings
• Option to remove effects on the lock screen
• An updated look and feel for Android 5.0
• Improved panning behavior for wide artworks
• Better support for new art notifications on Android Wear
• A full-screen artwork detail view on Android Wear
• A much-needed dose of bug fixes

API v2 is also now live on api.muzei.co and in Maven central. It includes stability fixes and a new contract API for reading the current wallpaper and listening to wallpaper changes.

Finally, we've created a Google+ community for Muzei discussion. Come one come all!

If you're in Australia then you really should install this app and get yourself some free Cardboard. The 3D video feature is pretty damn cool.
Telstra continues its association with Sydney’s annual New Years Eve party with the launch today of the 2014 version of their companion app, and this time they’re bringing Google Cardboard along for the ride. The app is a companion and to help you make plans for NYE and enjoy the fireworks presentation on the night – no matter where you[Read More...]

Congrats to the +Shifty Jelly team on an absolutely fantastic new release! I spent way too much time playing with the new animations.

Great blog post from +Zarah Dominguez on updating the Domain app for Material (including shoutouts to +Chris Banes and +Richard Fulcher!).

Think about an app, any app (but preferably Domain). Take one screen from that app and think about all the elements on that screen. Imagine each of those elements is drawn with ink on a square, rectangular, or circular piece of paper. Next, try fitting those pieces of paper into a glass box.

That intro paragraph is fantastic -- great summary of material design.

New blog post: Shared Element Transitions In-Depth (part 3a)

Yup... shared element transitions is such a big topic that I had to break the blog post into two sub-parts. This one is similar to the previous post about content transitions as it is mostly about how shared element transitions operate under-the-hood. Or more accurately, it is basically my attempt at condensing 2 months worth of research into a single blog post. :P

The next one (part 3b) will be more practical with example usage and code samples illustrating how to properly use the more advanced aspects of the shared element transitions API (i.e. postponed shared element transitions, implementing SharedElementCallbacks, etc.).

If you have any questions and/or suggestions, feel free to let me know in the comments. And thanks in advance to anyone who +1/reshares the post... really appreciate you all helping me get the word out! :)

New blog post: Content Transitions In-Depth (part 2)

This one gives a much more in-depth look into content transitions, an important new feature that hasn't yet been discussed a great deal in Android's official documentation. Hopefully this blog post will help!

If you have any questions and/or suggestions, feel free to let me know in the comments. And thanks in advance to anyone who +1/reshares the post... really appreciate you all helping me get the word out! :)

The update for Android Wear to 5.0 is now rolling out to watches, and we are pleased to announce that the official Android Wear Watch Face API is now available for developers. With support for custom watch faces, users have even more ways to personalize their watches, and developers have the ability to create all kinds of new experiences. For more information, including how watch faces work and how to deploy them, check out the blog post by +Wayne Piekarski at http://goo.gl/eJvubC and the video below by +Timothy Jordan

New blog post: Getting Started w/ Activity & Fragment Transitions

This will be the first of at least 4 blog posts I'll be writing about Activity/Fragment Transitions. This one is might seem like it's only a short introduction to the topic, but don't worry... most of the good stuff about the inner workings of the Activity/Fragment transition framework will be in parts 2 and 3. I think with such an unfamiliar and important new feature, starting with the basics is the right approach. :)
