The +Australian Open is doing some great things with social media:

“We’re concentrating more than ever on engaging socially with our fans,” Daniel Lattimer, who works on the digital team for the event. “We were the first Grand Slam on Twitter, and engagement has been going up there and on Facebook, so it’s important to provide people with that complement to the actual watching of the tennis during the tournament.”

Tournament officials plan to man the Twitter feed 24 hours a day all the way through final matches on Jan. 29 for the event’s global audience. There will be a fan leader board that ranks players based on buzz and there will even be a team of selected “Fan-bassadors” who prove themselves by being particular active online and sharing a wealth of tennis knowledge.

They're doing great things on Google+ too, so add them to your circles if you're a Tennis fan.

Reps. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) and Joe Barton (R-Texas) recently accused Facebook of evading questions about user tracking.

“Facebook seems to be saying one thing and doing another,” Barton said. “In the company’s response, it talks a lot about how they don’t currently ‘track’ users online, but they just asked for a patent that would allow them to do just that. Why ask for something you don’t ever plan on using?"

“I don’t believe that Facebook adequately addresses that question. If they get a patent that among other things explicitly mentions tracking the information about the activities of users of a social networking system while on another domain — how will it be used?"

via +CBSSports.com:
Did you watch Alabama beat LSU 21-0 to win the BCS Championship last night? If not, you weren't alone in finding your television entertainment elsewhere.

The overnight ratings for the BCS National Championship Game show that last night's rematch between Alabama and LSU was the lowest-rated title game in the 14-year history of the BCS, bringing in a 13.8 overnight rating, a 14% drop from last year's game between Auburn and Oregon.

no way! defense is a lost art and that game was as good as any title game. wished LSU could.... you know.... cross the 50 a bit. but i was impressed by their defense and it was a night of some serious battles in the trenches.

Some interesting Twitter stats to chew on:

Twitter users include:
• 75% of the NBA's players
• 50% of the NFL's players
• 82% of the U.S. House
• 85% of the U.S. Senate
• 87% of the Billboard Top 100 Musicians
• 93% of the top Food Network chefs

Also, Twitter has over 100 million active users worldwide (out of a total of over 200 million) but 40% of them have not tweeted in the past 30 days and lean towards simply signing in to read/listen.

Twitter gradually becoming 'news-ticker' for many, replacing RSS, email newsletters and tv/radio...I'm seeing it and hearing it from many.

New to Google+? Welcome aboard!

Here are some tips to help you get started:

Create some circles (you can think of these as "lists") then fill them with your connections. You can create circles for Friends, Co-Workers, Business, Family, etc, whatever you want to call them. The names are private and only you will see them, so make sure to keep them simple and easy to understand. This will help you segment your content later.

Fill out your profile. You can choose which of your circles will see each section of your profile. When you share content, you can also choose which circles will see it.

Add to your circles. Search for friends, brands, celebrities, blogs and interesting people to follow. Need ideas for people to add to your circles? Here you go: http://www.recommendedusers.com

Want to learn more? Check out the link below from +Mashable for a full overview of the Google+ platform. It does a good job of covering all the basics. If you want to do some serious research into Google+ and learn even more about the platform, check out this link from +Social Media Examiner:
