"Tired of the same old SuperComputing party where you get free food and booze by pretending you’re interested in some vendor products? We thought so. That’s why we’re offering free food, booze, and a pool tournament."

Always one of the more fun parties at #SC13 .   #HPC
Tired of the same old SuperComputing party where you get free food and booze by pretending you're interested in some vendor products? We thought so. That's why we're offering free food, booze, and a pool tournament. We still have great vendors supporting this community event, so be nice and ...

I've probably posted this before, but it's an excellent survey of the effects of network partitions in the wild. Lots of links to good post-mortems and case studies too. :D

This looks like loads of fun! A board game where you build an atom out of elementary particles. What more could a physics major want? ;)

But I'm sad to see it's still well short of it's goal, with only 6 days to go. So if it looks like fun and you have extra beer money, donate! I can guarantee at least one nerd who will want to play the game with you.
Be the first to build an atom out of the very building blocks of the universe. Competitive, team & cooperative play for 2-6 players.

I like the concept of getting the boost stage back after a launch -- a LOT! -- but Musk's estimate of losing 30% of the payload to allow a land-based recovery is rather sobering. It may still work out financially, but it still emphasizes to me how hard space is.
New engines, larger launch vehicle, and a controlled reentry of the first stage.

There seems to be some minor dispute in the comments over "first" relating to earlier STM images... But still a very cool result and demonstration of high-res AFM.
Observation of intermolecular interactions in quinolines could help to settle the nature of this kind of bonding

I can't agree with this enough.
Right now it's packaging season (not the official term!) at my university--a time of year when IT staff have to battle with silent installers, SCCM, MSI creation and Adminstudio in order to create ...

Old but good -- Charles Stross's excellent report on an engineering marvel, from a tour of the Torness nuclear power station.
I've just had a really amazing experience: a guided tour of the nuclear reactor complex at Torness on the Scottish coast. What made this tour unusual is that the tour guide in question, Les, happens to be one of the reactor engineers (as well as a friend) -- and he showed me (and a couple of ...

Regardless of politics -- this is a good point about the security concerns of cloud IT.
In 2008 when we were opening the US office for a European maker of membrane production equipment, we had all of the early IT choices someone has to make when first opening a business. How should we...

Introduction
I build supercomputers, keep them running, make them faster, and write software for them.

I also fence, play the trumpet, read lots of science fiction, and play a wide variety of board games and card games.  I'll have a conversation about just about anything.
