South to Antarctica

A bucket list journey. Spend ten days of the thirty in the Ross Sea, travelling ashore to soak in the scenery, the wildlife and the history of Antarctica. Travel safely with the Captain and crew as they negotiate your expedition boat through the Southern Ocean. The expedition leaders are some of the most experienced Southern Ocean naturalists, who have devoted a lifetime to research in this region. On board the atmosphere is peaceful and warm, more akin to a private yacht than a cruise ship and with just 50 passengers a very tangible camaraderie is created amongst passengers and crew.

The stone country, or Arnhem Land escarpment, is one of the most extraordinary wilderness areas in Australia. The Jatbula Trail in the Nitmiluk National Park features magnificent waterfalls that tumble from high quartzite cliffs, shady monsoon forests that line the creeks and stunning Jawoyn Aboriginal rock art that adorns the caves and overhangs.
This trek is the tropical equivalent of Tasmania’s Overland Track, a full pack bushwalk that gains access to the heart of the country. We trek during the cooler months to ensure the best experience of this tropical environment.

The Cape to Cape Track meanders 135km between Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin, sometimes along the beach, sometimes along cliff tops, but nearly always with a view of the wonderful Margaret River coastline. Take in cliff-top vistas, white sand beaches and clean ocean air. It’s a challenging but achievable walk which you’ll look back on with a great sense of satisfaction. https://activeearthadventures.com/activites/cape2cape/

The name given to this voyage ‘Galapagos of the Southern Ocean’ reflects the astounding natural biodiversity and the importance of these islands as a wildlife refuge. The islands all lie in the cool temperate zone with a unique climate and are home to a vast array of wildlife including albatross, penguins, petrels, prions, shearwaters and marine mammals like sea lions, fur seals and elephant seals. The flora is equally fascinating; the majority of it being like the birds and endemic to these islands.

This circuit trek takes us to the Peruvian Andes and the Sierra Huayhuash trek – a range of mountains 30 km long, where six peaks tower above 6000 metres, and 29 reach 5000 metres. This includes Yerupaja, the second highest peak in Peru (6634 meters). We trek to the base camp of Siula Grande (6344 meters) made famous through the Joe Simpson and Simon Yates near fatal expedition and subsequent movie “Touching the Void”.
