This slot canyon was the tightest squeeze I've ever been through! I will say it was not easy with a large pack coupled with a tripod. I had to drag my pack along beside me for most of the way! It was a very physical canyon, so I was relieved when it started opening up and we entered this beautiful section that was reminiscent of The Subway in Zion. This shot was taken just beyond the Subway section.

Here's an image from a hike we did last week. We almost didn't make it up here since we left later than we wanted to and traffic was bad. Once we got to the trailhead, we got some urgent phone calls that delayed us even further. But we hustled up the 3000ft vertical trail and arrived at this beautiful turquoise blue lake a little before sunset. There were a lot of clouds to the west and I kept hoping the light would break through. When I was almost ready to pack up and head out, the sun burst through for a few minutes of great light as it illuminated the entire valley below. Here is just one shot I took before it all faded.

With the sky full of ominous clouds and lightning in the distance, we were hoping for epic light on the Watchman. But the clouds ended up being too thick and it blocked the sun as it crested the horizon. But a few minutes after sunrise some light started poking through. In order to get this perspective, I had to use a special technique and I will be covering in a video tutorial that will be released free of charge to our loyalty subscribers. I love sunrises at Bryce Canyon when the hoodoos take on that sublime glow from the nascent light. Since all our photo workshops for the year have filled up, we added an additional offering for fall colors in Oct. Learn more via the link below and book soon before it fills up!

It's hard to believe summer will be over soon. Southern Utah is the perfect place to start thinking about capturing fall colors. We just announced a fall color workshop for Oct 16-20 where we'll be hitting the best autumn displays from Capitol Reef, Escalante, and down into Zion! Click here for more info:

There are several pink beaches around the world. The sand gets its color from broken coral pieces and shells left behind by foraminifera. These tiny marine creatures with red and pink shells live in the coral reefs that surround the beach. We got to spend a few hours on this beach in Indonesia and we had it all to ourselves! It felt like our own private beach. I included a piece of coral the waves washed up since it helps tell the story behind the pink color!

Happy Friday! Here's a peaceful sunset on the coast of Indonesia. I liked this distant rock since it almost looks like a ship. Shot was taken as a single image exposure at 350mm.

Here's an image from our Escalante Workshop last month. We hiked in the dark out to Sunset Arch where we setup to take a panoramic shot as the Milky Way rose above the horizon. It's not easy to do good foreground lighting with panos since you have to cover such a large field of view, so it took a little bit to optimize the lights. This shot was difficult to put together. I stacked multiple images for the sky and also had to focus stack the foreground since I shot this at f1.8. Action Photo Tours donated a portion of the proceeds from our Escalante Workshops to the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA) to help protect this sensitive area. SUWA was grateful for the donation and made us their "Business Member of the Month"!

One of the highlights of Indonesia was climbing the 2nd highest peak Mt Rinjani. It's over 12,000 ft tall and offers amazing views in all directions. We hiked up to base camp the night before, slept a few hours and woke up at 2AM for the climb to the summit. It was very cold with gusty winds and temps near freezing. It was a good thing we brought all our warm clothes! The loose volcanic scree made it even harder since it felt like you were on a treadmill. But the sunrise at the top made it all worth it. Here you can see Mt Tambora poking out above the mist. I really liked the pano shot since it shows the expansive views.

Padar was one of the most beautiful islands we visited in Indonesia. In order to get here for sunset, we had to charter a speedboat. Fortunately we found several other people we could split the cost with. The sunset was phenomenal and I really liked the warm to cool transition across the pano. By the time we hiked down to the bottom, it was almost dark and we were surprised to learn that the speedboat didn't have any headlights. I really hope this guy knows the way back I thought. But a few minutes after we departed, the full moon rose and gave our driver enough light to get back safely.
