It is not uncommon for anyone at some point in time to get locked out of a home or car, requiring the services of a locksmith. Often, people call locksmith technicians to have specific locks replaced on their doors or just to re-key a lock so that someone who has a copy of the older key cannot gain access to a property.

Lock replacement and cleaning, installation of locks and lock repair - these are some of the reasons why people need locksmith companies. While locksmiths once dealt almost solely with locks, keys, and safes, security innovations and technological advances have expanded the scope of the profession to include far more than most people realize. Locksmiths have to be knowledgeable about everything security related, from traditional deadbolts and doorknobs to high-tech burglar alarms and digital access systems.

Locksmiths encounter some interesting situations in their line of work. In one instance, a locksmith received a lock cylinder from a car door that had been taken off the car because the owner lost the keys, instead you can call your local locksmith and have them come out to you and make a new car key in your driveway.

Always ask a locksmith you hire for identification when they arrive. Many states require that locksmiths are licensed. Even if you are using a locksmith in a state where licensing is not required, you should be safe and ask for some sort of identification before you let them work on your home or car.

A full security review should be done beyond the home itself and consider past owners or tenants who may potentially still have access to your house or apartment. A key can be copied many times and it’s impossible to know whether a past tenant has made a copy of your new keys without your knowledge. If you’re worried about this then consider asking a professional locksmith to fit a patented system, whereby keys can only be copied with proof of ownership.

There is no telling how many different have copies of the key to your new home are out there! Keys are copied and given to neighbors, family members and to workers on extended jobs in your home. On top of that, a lost key may have gotten into the wrong hands or someone who previously worked in your home may have copied your key with the plan to return. Re-keying the existing locks will make all the old copies worthless. You might want to think about re-keying the existing locks when you move into a new home so that one of your most important elements of security is new and totally dependable!

Always rekey or replace your locks when you buy or rent a new house or apartment. The previous owner or tenants could have made copies of the keys, or they could have given spare keys to neighbors, family members, friends, contractors etc. If you don’t want strangers to have access to your home, you need to replace/rekey your locks.
