These exit signs present a new approach that adopts universal design principles and consider the needs of all people, including those who need an accessible way out during an emergency.

We believe it’s time for a change. A change in attitudes, perceptions and legislation regarding exit signs in commercial spaces. All buildings, facilities and modes of transport need to show the accessible egress route, with clear, unambiguous signage showing the path to safety for all occupants, including those with mobility limitations or a sensory impairment.

The new signs use the ‘Accessible Means of Egress Icon’ to help identify accessible egress routes, exit doors, refuge areas, areas of rescue assistance, evacuation elevators and evacuation chairs.

Universal design has been a topic of much discussion in recent times. In fact, the Association of Consultants in Access Australia dedicated their recent national conference to the theme “Universal Design: A Better Way.”
Universal design has been described as “the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialised design.”

This article has been published on Sourceable.net to try to spread awareness about Changing Places toilets within the architecture, construction and property sectors, please share within your own networks, thank you: "Changing Places cater for a different user group compared to standard accessible (or disabled) toilets. Toilets are a necessity for everyone. Everyone needs a toilet in their home or workplace and when we go out we expect to be able to use a toilet facility when visiting a public space or building. This should be a basic entitlement for everyone. Unfortunately it’s not the case. This article discusses the need within Australian society and proposes a case for consideration of Changing Places toilets within the Australian building regulatory framework."

The International Fire Protection (IFP) Magazine recently reported that June 2015 sees an incredible summer fire trade show spectacular for those people in the northern hemisphere.

The trade shows and conferences commence in Hannover, Germany with the world’s largest and most famous fire show Interschutz – http://www.interschutz.de/home

After that there is the International Firex in London – http://www.firex.co.uk/

Lastly, in Chicago USA there’s the NFPA’s Conference and Expo – http://www.nfpa.org/training/conference

IFP Magazine are providing a stand at all three major events and will be presenting a “Summer Fire Trade Show Spectacular” in a bumper June edition. I’ve been fortunate to have been featured in the package for two things, http://leewilson.com.au/2015/05/17/international-fire-protection-magazine-and-the-summer-fire-trade-show-spectacular/
