I received an email from this bride explaining that she had bought her dress but had recently noticed my Martina Liana 809 gown and wanted to try it on. I invited her to have an appointment at the boutique, to which she also brought along her other dress. This surprised me, and I asked her why she felt that she needed to try on other gowns if she had already bought her dress?

The bride replied that she didn’t want a strapless dress, and that whilst the dressmaker had offered to add straps to this dress, the bride felt that it would look silly with the keyhole back. She had also been quoted for the alterations - adding straps and running in the bodice came to $800! I nearly fell over…brides think that I am expensive?! I charge $600 for a whole design change!

The bride’s main concern was that she could spend another $800 and still not love the dress. The dress is constructed from a border lace, which means that the straps would be quite wide - combined with the shallow front neckline this would leave the bodice and neckline looking very square.

The bride tried both dresses on, backwards and forwards, until she started to make herself feel sick with worry over the money she had wasted on a dress she didn’t love. Brides - this happens all the time. PLEASE choose carefully and ask for a seamstress to explain if they suggest a design change.

The bride realised that the Martina Liana was a much better design for her - she was supported in the bust and the deep v neckline was more flattering to her shape. The fitted lace was the look she was originally going for. What do you think?

Hi Brides!

This bride came in today to try on her wedding dress for the very first time!

When she came to the boutique for her first appointment, I didn’t have her size in the dress that she liked. To allow her to see what the dress would look like, I got her to try on a dress in her size that was fitted to the hips. I then held the smaller sized dress in front of her, so that she could see how the skirt would look paired with the way the bodice would feel on. We spoke at length about how the dress would fit and what it could do for her figure so that she would walk down the aisle confident she looked great in the dress.

Her dress arrived this week and it looks exactly as I envisaged. It does need running in at the waist and bust, however this bride is still losing weight so we decided to hold off on the alterations until right before her big day.

There are a few reasons why this style is great for plus sized brides.

1. The colour is more flattering than a bright white.
2. The overlapping diagonal lines created by the pleated bodice draws the eye inwards and downwards.
3. The heavy straps balance out the hips (more apparent when the bodice is correctly fitted).

Wait until I post the pics of the final dress fitting - it is going to be great!

Today I met a bride for the second time. I met her quite a while ago, when it was too far out from her wedding to buy her dress. I had told her to come back closer to her wedding, but when we were discussing the details of her big day during the consultation part of her appointment, she admitted that it was only ELEVEN days before her wedding date!

The bride explained that she did already have a dress; however she was concerned about the fit and the way the dress made her feel. She purchased it from another local boutique and felt that she had been pushed into buying a dress that was too large and not necessarily the best for her shape. Even after multiple fittings, the dress still didn’t sit nicely.

She tried on two dresses that I had in her size, and as soon as she put the first dress on, she turned to her friend and said, ‘See, look how nice this looks. It fits and sits so much better.’

I explained that I wasn’t a fan of the brand that she had bought as I disagreed with the structure and cuts they used in their designs, but that I looked at the dresses from a dress-maker’s point of view…and that surely there was a reason she had bought the dress in the first place. She cringed and admitted that she had felt pressured into buying it and that now all she had was a dress that made her feel frumpy. She tried to balance it out by saying that she wasn’t the kind of bride who was ‘all about the dress’, but when I questioned why she couldn’t wear her original dress if she didn’t really care she admitted that she just couldn’t move forward with the idea of wearing a dress that she wasn’t going to feel nice in for the whole day.

Her friend cut to the chase - “The new dress looks much better than what you were going to wear. Just buy it!”

And so she did. I am looking forward to seeing pics of her big day!
