RGW's BTS Hunt Special

"Sun Lover" (and the "making of")

I am overwhelmed to have this image awarded First Place by two of the six judges and have it given an Honorable Mention by three of them in the "Sunburn" category of +Chrysta Rae's Photography Scavenger Hunt. Huge hugs to +Barry Blanchard  and +Derek Kind  for the first place and to +Jacob Lucas  +Chris Chabot  and +Alan Shapiro  for the HM.  A huge thank you to +Chrysta Rae  and to all the judges for their time and effort that they give so selflessly to the hunt.

The Making of "Sun Lover":

I had several "general" themes that I wanted to work on to push myself in this hunt: one was exploring symmetrical imagery, without creating boredom in design and the other, and most important one for me, was how to work within the constraints of my little camera (a Canon G12) and it's small sensor, but still accomplish something grand.

I had an idea early on, as to what I wanted this shot to be; a more literal translation of being burned by the sun. How to pull off creating a sun? … oh, that was a big sticker for me for a while, though!

I've been playing with with "Stack Modes" in Photoshop, as a method of fighting the noise I get with my camera, and the results have been great, but I had not tried it for more creative things. In this particular case, I was sitting in my living room, pondering how to create that sun (after oodles of researching!) and I looked over on my window shelf and there sat a red glass ball that I've had for ages.

RED GLASS BALL: https://picasaweb.google.com/103698889037599783920/MakingOfShotsSunLover2013SummerScavengerHunt?authkey=Gv1sRgCNT494HKp7GoQQ#5921473259318224834

So I decided to use that as my base for the sun, and try the "stack modes" out with multiple shots to get that fiery look. Now to do this, I shot it over 100 times, turning the ball each time to catch the bubbles a bit differently each time, as well as, changing the direction of the light behind it periodically.

MULTIPLE SHOTS: https://picasaweb.google.com/103698889037599783920/MakingOfShotsSunLover2013SummerScavengerHunt?authkey=Gv1sRgCNT494HKp7GoQQ#5921473228476826338

I then added some fire from my practice "campfire" shots, snipping out bits here and there to place all over … along with noise and some fiery paint dabs here and there.

And then added a naked woman for the "lover".

NAKED WOMAN: (hahaha … you didn't really think I was going to put a link to a naked woman here … this is Google+, remember?! … ;oD)

I color-corrected the whole thing to the reference sun images I'd seen (and the campfire) and, voila, the "Sun Lover" was borne!

If you use Photoshop and have not tried "Stack Modes" for Smart Objects of many layers, run a search on it and go play with it ... some very interesting things come about ... and sometimes they're the perfect thing to pull off your idea ... ;o)
