My new favorite fact: if something is fascinating, it's bewitching in the same manner as a divine phallus.  (NSFW link, unsurprisingly: many dicks.)

Words I have recently encountered that English needs to appropriate:

"Umtriebe" (Swiss German): an activity or behavior that disrupts or impedes the optimally efficient flow of things.  Example: holding up the checkout line because you can't find your wallet.  Related useful word: "Umtriebegebuehr", a fee charged for Umtriebe.

"Tsundoku" (Japanese): acquiring books, not reading them, and putting them in piles with other unread books.

This is exactly why I gave up on trying to find parenting advice (or even any sort of useful child-rearing information at all!) from books and most online sources.  I lost count of how many times I saw some variation on "if you don't do it our way, you are actively harming your child", of course paired with "to do it our way, you need to buy The Manual, and The Equipment, and The Special Food, and ...".

This would, of course, be repeated by every other source as well, often with direct contradiction on what the right way and the harmful things are.

Fear is depressingly effective marketing.

This a case of take what works (as far as advice goes) toss out what doesn't?

The 30-day running total is particularly striking.

Hat tip to +Fish N for pointing to these incredible graphs of this year's snow accumulation vs previous years.

I'm in a weird place about this - The Incredibles is one of my favorite movies for sure, but ... I don't want a sequel.  It was a good movie, a good story, and it had a good ending.  I don't want another one, or more Firefly, or more Futurama - the wonderful thing about stories is there will always be new ones, and I'd rather they not be hobbled by being tied back to old favorites.
While promoting Tomorrowland, director Brad Bird confirmed that his next film will be the [...]

Kind of like Star wars ... 4, 5 & 6 told the story, and 1, 2 & 3 were
hobbled. For me, one problem is that marketers get the upper hand on
sequels, and only want to sell what worked in the first.
Terminator 2 worked as a sequal because it had a new story, whereas T3 did
not.
My phone kept trying to change T3 to T3i. :-)

When you look at Google's presentations about Go, they are not shy about it. Go is about very smart people at Google solving very BIG problems. They know best. If you don't like Go, then you are small and are solving small pr...

For some reason I read this article in the voice of Zangief as voiced in "Wreck-It Ralph". (:
