"Never memorize something that you can look up."

So this is more of a spoof account instead of his actual quotes and whatnot? Oh man. I mean I'm sure he wouldn't have said this. Using our brains less makes us too stupid and more dependent on computers that will kill us in the future.
That sucks. I mean yea I get that the faintest ink is better than memory but memorizing things or knowing how to do stuff on your own without help I'm sure is beneficial to your brain. Maybe he couldnt imagine we would be able to use portable computers to speak foreign languages for us?
if I couldn't remember my phone number and I tried to google it, I bet amazon comes up top and tells me they have it on sale.
we might have to take this correctly, i think what he wanted to say was we should free our brains so they can do more meaningful work.
time will come when people have to use calculators to compute simple arithmetic... 5 x 12? google it!
nordin pumbaya, I am absolutely agree with you!
and what do u say about the your past history
Lol! This is what I wanted to tell my old history teacher. What's the point remembering all the details? Just look it up when you need it!
heyy!! tats what i strongly believe in too!
but i'd like to add tat some basic stuff's gotta be memorized
it makes sense eh!!! love it! google it! Exacto!
Now This Time Is Thinking....]
I think he is thinking why did he cannot have Google that time.
If you can't remember it, make sure you write it down, if you can't write it down, make sure you remember it! :O)
I disagree. It takes time! :))
even today we already have computer/ robotic buddy always with us to answer basic questions.. smartphones, smart vests, watches, eyewear etc.. some don't even wait for you to speak, they read your brain waves! so again do you need to memorize addresses, phone numbers?
What happens when the batteries run out?? Our brain is the only memory storage device which runs without needing to recharge everyday. What I learnt in Grade 1, I can even remember to this day.
Don't have to take it negatively. The real meaning is like this. Computers can store huge amount of data or facts easily, But its not easy to make a computer think or form theories. Human brains are gifted with ability to think easily.
Why would you want to be dependent on an external source of information? What would you do during a power failure? Would you want a surgeon that has to read Grey's Anatomy while he's cutting on you? This quote sounds ignorant when taken out of context.

me were tegger you was the buffon is mrs mogen at the me you d eken
If only the American educational establishment understood that advice.
There was actually a scientific study done about this published in nature--we actually have a tendency to not remember information we believe that we can find again, and we tend to remember more information that we don't think we will be able to find again regardless of whether or not we expect to use it.
I had a teacher who thought me that I shouldn't remember everything he told. Only where these things could be found. We were always allowed to have all books and documentation with us during exams. That would be the case anyway when we would get a job.
my motto. wrote it on an exam when i didnt know the answer and got 75% credit when i sited where to look it up
Why we are making our brains lazy.Nowadays it's even hard to remember phone numbers of our closest people.
"Unless you have to cram for exams that won't let you use any books or reference texts"...
That has always been my attitude, but I thought it had something to do with my bad memory. Now i know I'm in the same category as Einstein. Great!
+Jon Wright Many surgeons read up prior to performing medical procedures, Would it not be more ignorant to think that medical physicians/surgeons remember everything they have learned. They are after all, only human.
That's lazy talk right there but I can see the appeal behind this logic =)
Do you actually think that Google needs Advertisement?

It's like an university. If you use it wisely.
This is search engine advertisement!
Knowledge is power, why look up anything if you have the power??
" If you believe you can you probably can.!! "
yes I would like to be woman like Einstein its fantastic..........
das d magic of 21st century...
i think if he was alive now, he would say :"don't google every thing always! refer to your mind sometimes!"
Never is too big of a word, but in general, I agree :) I'd rather say that the only real value in memorizing is helping you to understand, but it only works if you not only memorize, but analyze. And if you analyze and understand, you don't really need to "memorize", not at least in the traditional sense
It basically a Variant translation actual quote is "I never commit to memory anything that can easily be looked up in a book."
munju s
never cook somthing that you can order by home delivary...
you need to remember what you want to look up :)
Now I wanted to search for something online but I can't remember how...
Didn't Albert Einstein really say that? I guess he had forgotten about it
Never put off till tomorrow what you can get someone else to do today.
Too true Al...the less your mind is cluttered up with assorted knowledge, the more room you have for important memories. Defrag your brain!
remember every bad thing you do will come back to you!
When you are courting a nice girl an hour seems like a second. When you sit on a red-hot cinder a second seems like an hour. That's relativity.
So, in today's terms that means memorize nothing but passwords. +Google and +Wikipedia allow me to look up anything... except my 271,345,881 passwords.
very true if we forced to memorized things we got headache
I follow this daily.
Ow and for the password i would say.........LASTPASS!
"Imagination is more important than knowledge" go albert e! Btw add imagination+knowledge+burning desire?
"with this combination you can divide, conquer and totally dominate whatever your passionate about in life" yippie KI ay !
What is important shd be stored in the super computer... 'human brain'. In the present era of computers, everything texted is available. But 'Values' of life taught by our elders for our own betterment should definitely be memorized to pass it on to the next generation! If we forget our morals, we become zombies!!
That's true. It save a lot of brain power which otherwise could be used elsewhere.
Never Google something that you often look up.
Just Qindex it!
its like never try to remember something you can look up its crazy.
Why Use a basket 2 fetch water when Ur Bucket is not Broken. He is Right.
do not force your mind. that's cool.
That sentence is nonsense: Memorizing some basic information is required/absolutely necessary for humans to be able to process information. We basically need it so that we can actually think.
If you do not memorize you will not be able to use it as a behavior!
we have to appreciate it am mansoor kurnool
ok so Einstein was a genius but i think that was his finest quote :)
+Sean M before the internet, there was such a thing as " psychic connection" a free public wi-fi of some kind.. Could someone confirm that we are not allowed to comment more than 500 times? tried it here and we are stuck at 500th comment..
Perfect! Stopped trying / being able to remember stuff ages ago...
after a few times of looking up it tends to stick in your head anyway...
trends change with time ..
I say that all the time but I am not in the same state as he is haha!!
and thats how you get dementia. cause your brain is not used to memorizing, memory perishes.
hahaha it's over !
just tell those who design the exam papers
Transactive Memory, it's not about knowing it, it's about knowing how to find it.
No wonder students don't learn in this Internet/search engine age.
Learning how to search is better then knowing. The search can be done with a tool like Google or in your head.

The answer to 99 times 32 can be found with simple math. Remembering that answer is pointless.
Rote memorization ISN'T learning, though. It's better to fully understand a concept than to be able to regurgitate a limited set of information about it.
It is not fair, we had to memorize it all now kids don't need to they've got Google.
A wise man once told me "you don't need to know everything, just where to find it."
This catoon look like is deep in google mind.i like this ancle.
Quite brilliant. You need your brain for other things
I've taken this to heart in my life in a big way. No wasted neurons.
Well saI'd,there are studnets who mug the entire book without understanding any of the concepts.
munju s
what was interesting ?
Have hear Shukoi Accident in Indonesia : Salak Mountain
I can't help myself, it just keeps getting in my head :(
haha love you einstein you always say what i always want to say
Such a simple saying but when you think about it it is very powerful.
I discussed this post with 1 person in a hangout.
I think that is not a good quote it will make us depend on computers too much
I wish the person interviewing me today understood this!
mod vee
I wish that the examiner can understand this!
great style outcomes a great thought !
then i should memorize only one thing ... "Nothing"
yeah just youd probably have to memorize chuck norris. we all know what happens when you look up chuck norris on google.
I'm still waiting for my "Harper Interface" - keyboards and monitors are so 90s...
most exams are made of things that you can lookup
Strange concept, not sure if I agree. I guess with a smartphone, many things are just a google search away.
Some of the most successful people are not necessarily the most educated or learned or skilled in every field, but they have multiple resources at hand that they can quickly call on to find something out, get a task done, or develop a project. Einstein had it well put.
Learning is handicapped. Where's the challenge and joy when all it takes now is to enter words, no matter how foolishly and the correct answer just pops up. Oh Google, what have you wrought on the earth!!!
a parents favorite answer
"the world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it" ~ AE
Oh! you are back? Lol, also the death is relative.
Google is like the best way to find things out these day lol:}
It's handy for some things, but don't abuse it. Consider the source before you accept what you read as gospel. How to clean a sink? When does a newborn start teething? Great. What do people think about politicians, religion, medicine, and celebrities? Don't trust a thing you see.
simplest of the things make you complex of man
Why the liquor in his hand? It doesn't make sense and it's stupid.
You are so right and Albert Einstein was too !
That's why I have a paper planner.
It took a long time to find the relativity theory.
He would find it more quickly with Google.
he whans his brain back some doc stold it sick ha
Sani, You can't be serious. One still has to understand the answer. Depth of knowledge is still needed to interpret the myriad facts that Google presents. The internet, like books, is just an extension of our memory to long-term-storage. Intelligence is still required to make use of those facts.

"There are three kinds of intelligence: one kind understands things for itself, the other appreciates what others can understand, the third understands neither for itself nor through others. This first kind is excellent, the second good, and the third kind useless." - Machiavelli, Niccolo
he looks like he came out of a bar that had a partty and then went to a hight school partty looks like he had agood time. HAHAHAHAHAHA
Albert...........tried it with your 'Theory of Relativity'........wasn't of much help......instead, suffered neurological imbalances for 2-3 weeks......now i understand why your hair got straightened up !
Who keeps posting for dead people?
just google it...google & google+ is the best you can ever have
such as studing lessons wich are in our books
Historians were pissed when he said that
Smart, using controversy to stimulate discussion. Personally I think we should treat our brains as though it was a muscle. The more we use it the stronger it becomes. The less use we use it the weaker it becomes.
But we are in a world in which if a person can't memorize things, he is considered as dumb. This world is becoming a total shithole.
fukn true! ive been sayin this...
hurrrrraaaaayyy 400 comments and still rising!
Follow me if you want more funny pictures
1! 500th! comment! hahahahahahaha take that einstein!
This one can potentially dismantle the indian educational system. :P
+Katrina Branstetter you will always have google when you have a mobile phone with data subscribed...hehehehhhh...God Bless Google!
This puts an emphasis on critical analysis rather than rote memorization skills which is seen as the lowest level of cognitive thinking.

This statement reflects the way that education is moving and it is becoming a more skills based system and is student centered. We have moved from the "sage on the stage" model to "the guide on the side" and the newest teachers are more like choreographers than they are anything else.

This quote is a perfect representation of how to behave in modern society where google and the internet are at your fingertips. Developing the skills to find the best information and look at it critically are now the most important factors of today's society.
