Invitation to Participate in Scholarly Publishing in Africa Survey

With all of the changes in scholarly communication and ICTs over the past few years, we are interested in learning more about the current state of scholarly publishing throughout Africa. Clobridge Consulting is working in partnership with African Journals Online to conduct a research study to collect, analyze, and disseminate knowledge in this arena – in order to share best practices, identify emerging trends, and gain insights from editors about their successes and concerns. While a good deal of research has been conducted over the past few years regarding global trends in the shift from print to digital, changing dissemination and business models, and uptake in technology to support publishing, no research has focused exclusively on these issues within Africa. This project is designed to explore such questions specifically within the African context.

More details and access to the survey are available at: http://clobridgeconsulting.com/scholarly-publishing-in-africa

All journal editors and publishers of African-based journals are invited to participate in the study -- please don't hesitate to share this invitation more broadly.

The survey is available in English and French. An offline version is available upon request. To request an offline version of the survey or to share comments, questions, or concerns, please email kim@clobridgeconsulting.com.

The survey will close on Friday, September 6, 2013.
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please contact us via email (info@clobridgeconsulting.com). Updates, Timeline, and Results. The survey will be open for approximately two weeks, closing on Friday, 6 September 2013. Results will be reviewed and analyzed.

very good initiative!
MalariaWorld has conducted an internet survey on attitude on open access among its members. Results were meant to be published already but publication has been delayed. So this will give insight into the consumer side of the matter complementing you survey concerning the publishers.

Please consider signing the White House petition to protect the right to read.

Details from the American Library Association (ALA):
Don't let big companies deny the print disabled access to books. The American Library Association supports a copyright exception to a World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) international treaty to increase access to information for people with print disabilities – those who are blind, have low vision, are dyslexic, have a learning disability or other disability that prevents them from accessing print.

The exception would ask WIPO member nations to establish a national exception that authorizes the making of accessible copies. This exception would be similar to the Chafee Amendment  (17 USC §121) in US copyright law. In addition, the exception would allow countries to share accessible copies (Braille, large print, digital formats like accessible e-books) across borders.

Negotiations are reaching a fever pitch with many powerful corporations, including General Electric, Exxon, and the motion picture and publishing industries opposing the treaty.  We need your help now.  Sign this petition and let the Obama Administration and the US delegation to WIPO know that you support the right to read for all.
