Today in 1877: The Army holds a West Point funeral with full military honors for the owner of this coat, Lieutenant-Colonel George Armstrong Custer.

He wore this buckskin coat as a lieutenant colonel with the Seventh U.S. Cavalry in the Dakotas. It was one of several owned, preferring to dress like a frontiersman while out West.

In 1912, Custer's widow, Elizabeth, donated this buckskin coat to the Smithsonian: http://bit.ly/1riVUNp

I can see orange and blue ....
The illusion is named Benham's top after Essex-born toymaker, Charles Benham, who invented it. Some people see green, others see yellow and a few see red.

Lots to do here and the history is well interpreted and presented. Loved the interactive stuff about the dig which had found the skeletons. Everyone was friendly and knowledgeable. Stunning views from the top so worth the climb up the steep hill. One of the best castles I have visited, definitely worth a visit.

Food is okay but took ages to get served. Took over an hour to get the bill once we had finished eating despite repeated attempts to get someones attention - surprising as you think they would want to at least try and flog you something else to drink. In the end had to go up and request the bill - plenty of other people were having it brought to their table so its not like that wasnt how it was done.
