RIP Adam West

I wasn't able to get this art done when Adam West passed away on my birthday weekend. I was busy. However, that doesn't mean I can't still pay tribute to him.

Adam West and the whole Batman TV show are a part of my DNA and helped to set the direction in my life.

Robert Smalls was born a slave who became a hero for the Union Army during the Civil War.

Here is how the story goes. It was 1862 and for almost a year Robert had been working on a Confederate Ship. Tired, wanting change, he started plotting a plan to escape.

On May 12th he put his plan in action. As the 3 officers aboard the ship decided to spend the night ashore, Robert and a few other slave men capitalized.

Robert put on the captain's uniform, steered the ship to pick up his family and the families of the other men, then steered the ship out of the Confederate harbor and surrendered the ship to the U.S. Navy.

For the Union, getting access to this ship was critical, as aboard was the code book containing the Confederate signals, and a map of the mines and torpedoes that had been laid in Charleston's harbor.

Robert and his men were rewarded for their action. He got to meet President Lincoln. And his courage became a major argument for permitting African Americans to enlist in the Union Army.

After the war, Robert would co-found the South Carolina Republican Party. Then then he would go on to represent South Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives.
