Chapter 1: Rico & Me, A Mentor's Memoir
September 25, 2009Dear Rico:I am writing this letter to you for several reasons. A couple of things that have happened in your life recently concern me. Mostly, they have served to make me feel that I have failed you. Not necessarily because of what you did, but because I can’t tell if they are things that you are sorry about.Dealing with these issues is excruciatingly difficult for me. Not only because I am having to face the fact that you are g...

I have worked with Tim Oakley for almost 15 years. My first interaction with him was in 2000 when as marketing director for Barran Liebman law firm, Tim helped us create the iconic firm logo. Since then, I have worked with Tim on countless other projects. In each case, I've been amazed and awed at his creativity. Not only does Tim create corporate logos and business systems, but he has spent decades working on set design and prop fabrication. His work has appeared in Star Trek films, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Jurassic World, to name a few. His work for television has included NBC's Grimm, along with Portlandia on IFC and The Librarians on TNT.

My family has gone to Addi's for years and its people make it a special place! Of course if you like humongous pancakes, that doesn't hurt. Bring your appetite and head to Addi's when you're in Springfield!

Great place to stay. Room on an inner courtyard on the 10th floor (the building has 40 floors) was really quiet and nice to come home to after an entire day out in the city.

This is fun if you have a good sense of humor about it all and enjoy optical illusions. A nice place to stop if you are not from the area and just stretch your legs for a while. There isn't anything else around here - it's in the middle of nowhere. You have to drive up to Grants Pass or south to Medford to hit a decent size town, so make sure you've eaten before you stop in.

We have a teenager and a 5 year old. This is a good place to take kids for swimming lessons. It's not super crowded like all the other gyms in town. It had a rough history when the former owner Sam Adams (a Seattle guy, not the former mayor) ran it into the ground. Everyone sued everyone else and now it's owned by Allstate Financial, which operates 200 gyms around the country. Slowly but surely they are making improvements and hiring new people. After being a member of the Princeton (Bankrupt) and Ballys at Yamhill (closed/defunct) and then the All Star Fitness (bankrupt), it's nice to be someplace where it feels like they are getting their act together a little more finally. I don't mind paying more, just keep the place up and everyone will be happy! I don't want 5,000 people there either (like at 24 hour) and I want it family friendly. Charge me what you think it's worth and I'll pay it as long as you keep it clean and give me towel service!

Have lived here over three and a half years and like it very much. The staff turned over quite a bit when we first got here but things have really stabilized. The Ladd has a lot of advantages over many other area high rises. As in the rest of Portland downtown, rents have skyrocketed recently, but that trend is expected to slow. Planned new apartment towers are preparing to begin construction near Fox Tower (15 floors of apartments in a mixed-use office building). That plus another building planned for near Safeway at 11th and Jefferson will add another 350-400 units to the mix within the next couple of years in the immediate area. There are hundreds of apartments already under construction in the downtown core (Pearl, in SW near Lincoln HIgh, and on the inner Eastside). While this construction is helping to add units to the market at a time they are desperately needed, it will be another year or two before rent hikes stop increasing at the rapid clip of the last couple of years. Portland ranked in the top 10 for the nation for effective rent growth in 2012 and again so far in 2013. This year Portland's rents rose an average of 6-9% depending on the part of town you live in (according to various studies). So, long story short, get an apartment that you can easily afford now, because you can expect in a year the rents will be going up. Leave yourself some breathing room if you don't want to be moving in 6-12 months.

Have bought some bookcases here (hard wood furniture) and food items and occasional dishes and rugs and even outdoor furniture! Everything has held up well. I've never had any problems with the staff. But the best thing they sell is the COFFEE! It's fantastic. You have to grind it yourself but you get about 3x as much as you get in most stores for the same price! A great deal and worth going in just for that.
