One step closer to an HIV-free world
mrspoonsi sends word that researchers from Temple University have managed to eliminate the HIV-1 virus from human cells for the first time. "When deployed, a combination of a DNA-snipping enzyme called a nuclease and a targeting strand of RNA called a guide RNA (gRNA) hunt down the viral genome and ...

Great article about how HFT impacts investors/traders and how the IEX came about. Wonderful story-telling.
The stock market really was rigged... “It’s 2009,” Katsuyama says. “This had been happening to me for almost two years. There’s no way I’m the first guy to have figured this out. So what happened to everyone else?” The question seemed to answer itself: Anyone who understood the problem was making money off it...

Fireplaces are great for two things: 1) traveling via floo powder when you're not yet old enough to apparate, and 2) drinking Scotch near when it's snowing in NYC. Helping you dominate the latter harder than Harry at a Triwizard Tournament (so, really hard), is this epic list of 61 fireplace-equipped drinkeries, all arranged by neighborhood in case you want to find the one closest to your apartment, or, more awesomely, get your fireplace bar craw...

Never believe someone who claims they'll turn your company around by using leverage. Don't bother to stay at a company that is getting LBO'd to death. Carl Icahn...the kind of investor companies pay to leave them alone. Glad Apple didn't roll over for him.
When Carl Icahn Ran a Company: The Story of TWA. From “TWA – Death Of A Legend” by Elaine X. Grant in St. Louis Magazine, October 2005. ––– Ask any ex-staffer what went wrong with the [bankrupt] airline, and you'll get one answer: Carl Icahn, the corporate raider who took over TWA in 1985 and ...

I always liked being able to work on the whole system/all the systems under my group's umbrella. It gives me the ability to see everything that's needed for our customers and understand the dependencies better. I also like working on non-related projects simultaneously so if one project gets stuck, I can still move forward without being stuck on someone else.
The natural tendency of growth is towards specialization. When you only have a few people, they must by necessity do everything. When you have more people, there's enough room and slack to let people build specialization kingdoms that only they have the keys to. Don't be so eager to let that ...
