I tested it yesterday, it really is true. The shadow makes the dark squares around "B" much darker creating the illusion.

One quick way to verify this without printing it out etc. like some people do is to cover up the green cylinder with your hand and look past the fact that one square has a dark letter and the other square has a light letter. If needed, also cover up the dark squares between A and B.
 
No they aren't... I can see they are different....
