Growth Mindsets are Contagious
(Photo credit: http://cohort21.com/derekdoucet/wp-content/blogs.dir/22/files/2014/11/growth-mindset.gif) Recently, I have been thinking a lot about growth mindset. Being the topic of the latest Google EDU newsletter and a recent SAVMP prompt, I couldn’t hel...

Thanks for having me on for a #20time  conversation!

Hey Everyone! Just spreading the love -- thanks to A.J. for sharing time and information. This may get you all a few new group members!
Whether they call it 20 Time or Genius Hour, more teachers are carving out regular chunks of instructional time to let students pursue their passions. [...]

Can't wait to get back to teaching again (hopefully nome time in the not-to-distant future (still having surgeries, and getting therapy done, but I'll be back!), and I loved #20%Time! Thanks for schooling me in it back in the day!

Are you frustrated with the "game of school"... So am I. Let's stop it.
Bobby was an 11th grade student in my English class…and he was angry. “I don’t understand this project, Mr. J. What are we being graded on and when is it due?” I looked around at the class to see a handful of students just like Bobby. They weren’t used to this. In their 11 years …

This is the type of story that we need to do a better job of sharing in education. I’ve been working with Tim for the past seven years…and until recently didn’t know all the amazing work he was doing in the classroom. This past year Tim was able to share some of the great work …

+John Spencer  asked me a few months ago if I’d be interested in starting a new podcast with him, and after going back and forth on ideas…we decided to do something a bit different.

You see, I have a 35 minute commute to work everyday. I love listening to podcasts on the way to work, and I enjoy the daily habit of learning from a show.

We created this podcast so it would give you five new episodes each week (Monday-Friday) with short (10-15 minute) shows that cover a specific question in depth.

After recording over 10 episodes I can say that I’m so excited about sharing this podcast with the world!

Our first four episodes are on iTunes right now. I hope you give them a listen, and let us know what questions you have!
It’s official! Our new educational podcast, “Classroom Questions”, is live on iTunes. You can listen and subscribe on iTunes here (or check out our site ClassroomQuestions.com). John Spencer asked me a few months ago if I’d be interested in starting a new podcast with him, and after going back and forth on ideas…we decided to …

It's time to shift our #edtech  narrative (it's not saving education)...
I’ve heard this question in various forms many different times: How is technology going to save education? Radio and TV were going to save education, but of course they didn’t. They changed consumption from primarily reading or live viewing to listening and watching…but the prediction of televisions replacing teachers in the classroom has yet to come …

What are we teaching our children and students about the power of words...
I had a teacher who once told me I would most likely be a college dropout. Her words mattered. When I told my wife I wanted to write a book and she said without blinking an eye, “Do it.” Her words mattered. I told my daughter the other day how proud I was of her …

Last year my mantra was "Take Risks"...this year I'm looking to have "new eyes"...
Each school year I try to take a new approach and have a renewed focus on my work as an educator. As a teacher this would often be impacted by the type of work we were doing in the classroom. While goals are always important, I believe a class “mantra” is even more important. Mantras …
