I HEART the 500 West Hotel (Hostel) in San Diego. It's literally the BEST deal in town during San Diego Comic Con. The staff/management are super friendly, pretty quiet, it's a great slice of the world with people staying from all over getting their geek on, it's literally a few blocks from train station AND only a 20 minute walk to Gaslamp/Convention Center. I've been staying here for years and no it's not the Omni with all the bells and whistles but you aren't paying Omni money either (so how can you complain)!!! It's inexpensive, safe and in the heart of the city. I do recommend you bring your flip flops (shared bathroom/showers), a caddy to carry your toiletries, a robe for after your shower and a pair of socks/warm nightclothes since it can get chilly in San Diego.

This is a tough one to review. It is dorm style lodging at a fair and economical price. It should not and can not be compared to a standard 2, 3 or 4 star hotel. The building remains a historic military dorm style with shared bathrooms and small spaces (no exceptions). Low rates and a unique offering limits individual appeal and profits (in my opinion) for renovation. They serve a niche and humble market. I appreciate the level of detail and care I have observed, but some people just don't understand how this hotel cannot operate just like others. They do a fine job, with limitations. If you are on a excursion or don't need more than a place to rest you are in luck. In my case this provide me adequate lodging in a prime location at a fraction of the cost. All my objectives and needs were met. I appreciated my stay and sympathize with the staff.

I came to town for BUSINESS, but the WiFi was out the whole time. When checking in, I asked the front desk gal (who was VERY short with me, from word one) how to log onto the WiFi. She said: "we don't have that." I said, "but your website says you do." She said: "well it broke." No apologies. No: "here's something else I could recommend." Nothing! Short, Apathetic, Unhelpful. And cold. The building itself proved just as abysmal; w/ flies, stained ratty carpet, and a host of sketchy (SCARY) local "residents". Go on your own -- I suppose -- if you're an adventurer with SUPER-low expectations. But be VERY prepared to switch over to other accommodations in a hurry.

It cost me $100 to spend the night here and I wish I had spent an extra $50 to stay at a reputable hotel. This place is as decent as a crack house. The shared bathrooms are disgusting to say the least. Unless there is an urgent need to stay downtown, you can get a more decent hotel a little further away for a similar price. At least the wifi was working while I was there.

DON'T go to this hotel unless you have absolutely no other choice: there was no WiFi (in contrast what the website tells. A frontline staff member tried to fool me when "explaining" that). My room was clean, but tiny, pretty run-down and noisy (window to always busy Broadway S.). There was one shower on a floor of approx. 50 rooms, the second one was out of order. That said, I again firmly advise you to look for another option. It is cheap, but this advantage comes at an unfortunate price.
