Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, Chamonix or simply Cham' to her friends, stands in the formidable shadow of the peak of Aiguille du Midi on France's border with both Italy and Switzerland. Home of the Winter Olympics of 1924, it's been attracting British powder hounds, mountaineers and summer hikers in their droves ever since.

The Netherlands is a lush, flat country with low horizons and high skies filled with the silvery luminescence like those found in the landscape paintings of the Dutch Masters. Most visitors expect to find tulips, cheese, and wooden shoes, but the country has so much more to offer. In fact, no other European state offers so much variety, so much history, and so many picturesque sights in such a small area. The story of The Netherlands is one of the sea and her people’s battle to keep it at bay and is as old as the country, itself.

Ireland was for centuries the mysterious western fringe of the known world, a haven for hermits, rebels and adventurers. Only 64 miles away from Britain across the Irish Sea, it remained a land with its own lawless freedom despite the efforts of many conquerors to control it.

In central Europe lies a mountainous, land-locked beauty of a country that’s defined by rolling hills, breath-taking Alps, and vast green meadows. Austria is one of Europe’s top destinations, increasingly popular with growing numbers of visitors. But it’s not just the hills that are alive; Austria is also characterized by cultural, historical and artistic abundance. Nowhere else are these delights more accessible, and more charming, than in Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck; the three brightest jewels in Austria’s urban crown.

Long renowned as a honeymoon hotspot, Mauritius offers newlyweds a ton of fun-packed activities custom made for two. For those willing to leave the comfort of their resort on their dream Mauritius honeymoon, there's a myriad of things to do in twos — from diving shipwrecks off the east coast, to sailing to a nearby island aboard a modern catamaran to enjoying lunch at a turn-of-the-century tea plantation in the island's south.

With the British summer in full swing, there's no better time to start planning that winter family getaway to the States. Run it past the kids but I'm sure you'll get thumbs up all round if Orlando's theme parks are on the itinerary.

Italy is a land of striking contrasts. It’s a place rooted deeply in the history of Western Civilisation and in its remembrance of the past. Here lie centuries of culture — a Roman temple silhouetted against the sunset, a patriotic statue in a town square, paintings and sculptures too numerous to mention let alone see. Every stone has a story, every piazza a legend, every palazzo an intrigue. All has been jealously preserved so that the past lives side by side with the vibrant present.

Bruges is an anachronism — a sprawling, medieval metropolis once world renowned, now preserved as if in amber — a stop-frame portrait of a community that died while it was still young.

In many ways, Munich, situated at the southern end of the Romantic Road, remains a sophisticated village of over a million people. Most people associate Germany's third-largest city with beer drinking. And so they should. It's probably got more beer halls than any other city in the country, plus it draws thousands of people to its famous annual celebration, Oktoberfest. But the city has so much more to offer.

Since the original Disneyland in Florida swung open its gates way back in 1971, its been a success story on an unprecedented scale. Disney paved the way for the mega-parks that followed and although many of its ideas have been mimicked, no other franchise has come close to perfecting the Disney recipe for success.
