As Melbourne as a cloudy Saturday afternoon watching the footy at the MCG, Moomba has been entertaining locals and lucky visitors alike since 1955. For four days over the Labour Day long weekend, the banks of Melbourne's iconic Yarra River come to life with Australia's most-loved community event. Moomba features a program packed with family-friendly events and attracts hundreds of thousands each year come rain, hail or shine—and with Melbourne's weather, all three on any given day are distinct possibilities.

For many visitors to Vietnam, Hanoi is the first stop on a north to south adventure that takes in the natural beauty of Halong Bay, the hill-top retreats of SaPa (to the north) or Dalat and the beaches of Nha Trang or Hoi An before moving on to Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta to the south. It's a well worn path for good reason and an itinerary that visitors can put together themselves. eShores.co.uk has some great itineraries which combine Hanoi with other Asian destinations, they're well worth checking out for a little holiday inspiration. Those in the know put aside plenty of time for Hanoi. For many, the Vietnamese capital is the undisputed jewel in Vietnam's crown, a highlight of any visit to South East Asia.

An old saying, "All roads lead to Rome," pretty much sums it up. Surely they must, for traffic in this sprawling Italian metropolis is just short of a nightmare. Everyone seems to be rushing to get who knows where. And directing them are policemen looking as if they stepped out of a Roman mural.

Abu Dhabi is fast becoming one of the most popular places to travel, with an extremely glamorous and luxurious reputation, but that doesn't mean you have to break the bank to have a good time in Abu Dhabi. Having spent a lot of time in Abu Dhabi, I can tell you that you really can have an amazing time on a budget; you just have to know where to look. Luckily for you, I'm here to make it that little bit easier.

I love travel. I love seeing new places and experiencing new things, that’s why I spend my quiet hours at home scouting new destinations on the Internet and sketching out an itinerary of things to do when I get there. So it may surprise you to hear that I plan not to travel for a while as I plan to do some serious saving up, for my next trip, which will be the thing dreams are made of.

Many visitors find themselves killing time in Dubai en-route elsewhere. Often it's a serendipitous stopover, the unexpected start of a middle-eastern love affair. Its location, roughly equidistance between Europe and many of the South East Asian holiday hotspots, make Dubai a wonderful place to break up a long-haul journey.

It’s exotic. It’s chaotic. It’s Bangkok, one of the world’s most exciting cities. Known to the Thais as the “City of Angels,” Bangkok seethes with life. It’s summer daytime temperatures can only be described as Bangkok hot, with humidity so high you’re clothes will become soaking wet seemingly without effort.

Your first impression of Amsterdam may be how much it resembles a giant outdoor museum. Indeed, 6,700 buildings in the city centre are protected monuments, virtually intact from the Golden Age of the 17th Century, during which time Amsterdam rose to spectacular wealth, political power and cultural heights.

Having lived in Abu Dhabi for a number of years — many people often ask me why they should visit Abu Dhabi when they have already been to Dubai (there are still some people that ask me where Abu Dhabi is but fortunately that's decreasing year on year). Well the reasons, I could write a book — but in this instance I am not going to, let's start with a short two-day trip and make sure we make the most of it shall we.

Shanghai's turbulent past reads like a James Clavell novel. Until the mid nineteenth century at the conclusion of the first Opium War, Shanghai was an important, albeit underdeveloped trading hub dealing largely in exports of cotton, silk, and fertiliser—due in no small part to her location at the confluence of the Yangtze River and the East China Sea.

The barmy British are at it again! It's a well known fact that the United Kingdom is home to more than its fair share of the world's offbeat events—the world championships of shin kicking, nettle eating, black pudding throwing and caravan racing are just a handful of competitions that spring to mind. Come early May and the UK's bizarre festival focus shifts to Ponds Forge in Sheffield where competition is fierce in the World Water Bombing Championships.
