Great tips! Keep your gardening tools sharp by cleaning them after use! "

After you've used the tools, hose them off to get rid of anything that might have stuck to the blades. Then wipe the blades down with something to prevent them from rusting while you've got them stored away.

As long as you keep them clean, and don't lose a washer, they'll last a lifetime. "
Part of DIY is taking care of your tools.

As a blacksmith, I come from a long tradition of helping farmers keep their kit running, and today that usually means someone will ask me to sharpen something.

No surprise, then, when a local gentleman asked me to put an edge on his father's gear.

The thing about the shears and loppers is that they don't usually need their edges sharpened because they aren't cutting through abrasive material that will wear down the edge. Unless you're planting them in the ground, trying to cut through brush below the surface of the soil, the factory edge will likely last a lifetime.

Where this breaks down is if you don't keep your pieces clean and intact. In this case, both the loppers and shears were missing a washer. This allowed everything to loosen up so the blades weren't crossing in the right plane.

Then there's the dirt and rust. Both are corrosive, after a fashion, and will wear down an edge.

After you've used the tools, hose them off to get rid of anything that might have stuck to the blades. Then wipe the blades down with something to prevent them from rusting while you've got them stored away.

As long as you keep them clean, and don't lose a washer, they'll last a lifetime. Or, do as you like and hope you have a friendly local blacksmith willing to bring them back to serviceable condition! :D
